Speaking of the Class of 2026
As Michael Milbourn eased his vehicle to a stop in front of Crawford Hall, young men dressed in gray T-shirts approached the passenger-side doors with the expert timing of hotel bellhops.
“They descended on our car and offered to help, and I said, ‘Have at it,’” Milbourn recalled. “These guys have been carrying boxes up and down the halls since we got here.”
For first-year students and their parents, there is much to unpack: boxes, suitcases, crates, and a whole range of emotions.

Award-winning Summer Scholars program builds tomorrow’s researchers
Abby Engler’s fascination with science took hold at an early age.
While her classmates sunk into video games, Engler loved nothing more than conducting experiments with model rockets and watching the eruptions of papier-måché volcanoes filled with baking soda and vinegar. Her idea of quality television was watching “The Mythbusters.”
So as Engler ’25 progressed through her first year at Denison University, the biochemistry major wondered whether she could spend her summer doing something more than teaching swim lessons and lifeguarding at her home in Charlottesville, Va.
Read how Engler found her answer through Denison Summer Scholars, a program for rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors to undertake independent or collaborative projects in the sciences, social sciences, humanities, fine arts, and interdisciplinary fields. The research pursued, knowledge gained, and lasting faculty relations formed through this program encourage students to become the architects of their lives.

New Hoaglin Wellness Center expands services with a holistic approach
Over the past few years, Denison has grown its definition of wellness, moving beyond physical and mental health to include wellness education to create lifelong habits for well-being.
The university’s new Ann and Thomas Hoaglin Wellness Center, opened in late August 2022, advances these efforts and establishes a hub for medical, counseling, and wellness-centered activities for the entire campus community. The nearly 16,000-square-foot center, which replaces the health center once housed at Whisler Hall, is the culmination of years of collaborative planning and student-centered research.
Read more about the Hoaglin Wellness Center, named for Ann and Tom Hoaglin, to honor their philanthropic leadership of the project. The Hoaglins, both members of the Denison Class of 1971, are long-time civic champions and passionate advocates for their alma mater. Their vision for the Hoaglin Center inspired several Denison alumni and parents of Denison students to support the project financially.

Remembering Tony Lisska
Tony joined the faculty at Denison in 1969, launching an extraordinary 52-year career on The Hill. He served as dean of the college for five years, chaired the philosophy department three times, and founded and chaired the Honors Program for 15 years.
Tony retired from Denison in 2021, leaving an indelible mark on Denison and Granville. His legacy lives on: He’s the namesake of the Lisska Center for Intellectual Engagement, rededicated in 2016 to honor Tony’s enduring and exemplary service and dedication to the college.
In a place defined by relationships, Tony’s connections with others shaped the lives of generations of students, colleagues, and all who had the pleasure and honor of knowing him.
