Publications & Resources
Guide Explores Medical Nutrition Therapy and Diabetes
Learn how medical nutrition therapy can improve diabetes management for people without homes with our new Nutrition and Diabetes Guide. The publication highlights the role of registered dietitians in the treatment of diabetes, including case studies, resources on health literacy and food insecurity, healthy recipes, and more. Read strategies and personal experiences from registered dietitians and learn more about Medical Nutrition Therapy for people experiencing homelessness in our guide and accompanying webinar.
New Resource Examines the Role of Adverse Childhood Experiences in Health Outcomes
Developed in partnership with the Bassuk Center on Homelessness and Vulnerable Children and Youth, our latest fact sheet explores “Homelessness & Adverse Childhood Experiences.” Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are traumatic events that individuals experience before the age of 18—such as neglect, abuse, substance use, or parental mental illness. ACEs compromise neurological development and increase the risk of immediate and long-term adverse health outcomes. Read the publication to learn about the connections between ACEs and homelessness and discover effective screening and response tools.

Recent Webinars Explored Childhood Trauma and the Role of Registered Dietitians (RDNs) in Diabetes Care

This peer-learning discussion offered practical strategies for addressing ACEs, complementing our recent fact sheet. Another session examined how Medical Nutrition Therapy can improve diabetes management for people experiencing homelessness. Registered dietitians from across the U.S. shared innovative approaches to nutrition care and other strategies in the webinar.
In the Field
Take Action on Work Requirements in Medicaid and Food Stamps
The Council continues to stand up for human rights and push back against cumbersome and ineffective work requirements. Read about the hypocrisy of work requirements in a piece by our Senior Director of Policy, Barbara DiPietro, PhD, and learn how you can take action against proposals for work requirements in food stamps from our partners at the Food Research and Action Center and Medicaid with our comment letter on the Tennessee waiver in Mobilizer. The latest issue summarizes policy news relevant to the HCH community, such as the new Medicare For All bill, the Green New Deal, Title X changes, and more.
Access Health Center Tools and Resources
The National HCH Council has collaborated with other national organizations who support HRSA-funded health centers to launch the Health Center Resource Clearinghouse. Recent Podcast with Council CEO Spotlighted Links Between Health and Homelessness
NHCHC CEO Bobby Watts featured in a new t3 “Changing the Conversation” podcast with host Jeff Olivet and the Center for Social Innovation. “Housing: A Prescription for Health” examines the links between health and homelessness, as well as the role of racism and the importance of communities in the struggle to end the homeless crisis. “If we do not address [people without homes’] health,” states Watts, “we will not be able to restore them to a place where they can maintain housing.” Listen to the podcast.
Homeless Health Risks and Links Between Health & Homelessness in Media Spotlight
The Council lent its perspective to recent news coverage of homeless health care issues in the Los Angeles Times, Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), Atlantic, and Thomson Reuters Foundation. Hypothermia deaths among Angelenos without homes were the subject of a February LA Times piece, and a story in The Atlantic explored epidemics of typhus and other diseases in Californians experiencing homelessness. Additionally, further support for housing as health care came into focus in JAMA’s “Hospitals Turn to Housing to Help Homeless Patients,” as well as the Thomson Reuters Foundation’s “Homing In on Health.” The Council is always happy to provide guidance on homelessness and health care to the media: learn more.
