Annual Dr. martin luther king, jr. convocation

On Friday, January 13, Brebeuf Jesuit will hold its annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Convocation in the West Gym from 10:15-11:25 a.m.
The convocation is a collaboration between the Black Student Union and the Diversity Office, and this year’s program will be a special one. A troupe of actors from PinPoints Theatre of Washington, D.C. will be coming to present a much-acclaimed play called The Meeting, which is premised upon a fictitious encounter between Dr. King and Malcolm X in a hotel room. The play asks the audience to consider the question of how the motivations and approaches to social change of Dr. King and Malcolm X compare with one another and how such a conversation might have unfolded. The production has been performed on countless college campuses and in numerous corporate settings to great acclaim.
This program was made possible with the support of the Mothers Association Enrichment Committee, the Dads Club, and the Alumni Association.  Everyone within the school community is invited to attend.
Officers from the Black Student Union will open and close the convocation.
If you have questions about this coming program, contact Freezell Brown, Director of Diversity and Inclusion.
NOTE ABOUT ASSEMBLIES REQUIRING CONVOCATION DRESS
This will be the first of this year’s assemblies where “convocation dress” is required of students. (There will be three others this semester, for a guest speaker on February 9, Holy Week Mass on April 12, and the Spring Honors Convocation on April 25.)
A reminder from Brebeuf Jesuit's Handbook guidelines for convocation dress:
  • Boys: dress pants, dress shirt and tie. Sweaters and sports jackets are optional. All students’ shirts should be tucked into their pants at all times.
  • Girls: a dress, a skirt or dress slacks with an appropriate top and dress shoes. All dresses or skirts must touch the knee.

Picture of the Week

Congratulations to Julian Boes '18!
Brebeuf junior Julian Boes was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout in a ceremony before break!
Julian's Eagle project was the construction of an educational garden at St. Richard's Episcopal School. The garden is used by teachers to provide experiences with urban gardening and agriculture.
Achieving the rank of Eagle Scout is a true family affair for Julian.  He joins his grandfather, father, two uncles, brother and cousin in this accomplishment.

Loves About Brebeuf
I love the teachers at Brebeuf. They are all so inviting and friendly. I also really enjoy the retreat program at Brebeuf. Retreats allow me to see myself and others and grow in a span of several days.
Favorite Class
My favorite class is Zoology with Dr. Califf, because it pushes me out of my comfort zone, especially when we do dissections.  During my first dissection of a planaria, I was led to tears. But over the course of the semester, I learned a great deal and became more comfortable with slicing up dead animals in the name of science.  I now choose to dissect in my free time for practice. I will visit Dr. Califf on breaks and she allows me to dissect mollusks and squids.
Future Plans
I am still waiting to hear from Notre Dame, as they are my number one school. I have been accepted to Saint Louis University as well.  I plan to major in aerospace engineering with the long-term goal of becoming an astronaut.

Random Fact
A couple of years ago on the 4th of July, I helped Shaquille O'Neal set up his firework display at his house.
What has been your favorite Brebeuf experience or most memorable moment so far?
Would have to be my Kairos experience. I enjoyed getting to know myself more. I would encourage all Brebeuf students to attend!
Do anything fun over break?
I visited California with my family for a week, leaving right after finals and coming back on Christmas Eve. Along with traveling from San Francisco to Los Angeles along Highway 1, I was able to tour Facebook headquarters.  My favorite part of the trip however, was being able to tour the Livermore National Laboratory outside of San Francisco. The most interesting thing I saw was the National Ignition Facility. This is a facility with 192 powerful laser beams, housed in a ten-story building the size of 3 football fields and can deliver nearly two million joules of ultraviolet laser energy in billionth-of-a-second pulses to the target chamber center. I had to get security clearance to tour the facility three months in advance!
Other than traveling to California, I really enjoyed spending time with my family.

SAT/ACT Prep Course Registration

Veteran Brebeuf Jesuit teachers Ms. Patti Brown (former English teacher, current Learning Center Director) and Mr. Eric Graham (Mathematics teacher) will be teaching the eight-week Brebeuf Jesuit SAT/ACT Prep Course to current juniors during Semester II.
The four-week English/verbal section (which includes preparation for the analysis essay and the reading and writing tests) as well as the four-week Math section will be taught prior to Spring Break. Students must commit two hours per week for the course, plus any necessary time for homework.
The SAT was completely revamped last year. Both teachers will incorporate all of the new components of the test in their instruction. All sessions meet from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in room 108. The course fee, which includes several practice tests, is $250 and will be billed directly to your Brebeuf Jesuit account. Sorry, but we are unable to accept checks.

New Orleans Spring Break Service Trip

Brebeuf will be sending a group of students on the annual Spring Break service trip to New Orleans April 2-8, 2017.  This trip provides a unique experience for students wanting to spend their Spring Break helping others who have undergone the tragedy and destruction of Hurricane Katrina. We will be partnering with Habitat for Humanity and assisting the construction of affordable housing for the residents in need. Students will also explore the city to experience its rich culture and witness the rebuilding of New Orleans first-hand.
Interested students must pick up an application packet in the Community Service Office. The trip is limited to 22 students.
Please contact Nick Klingler with any questions at nklingler@brebeuf.org  or 317.524.7005.

Second Semester Signups for Dayspring Now Available

Every Thursday a group of three to five students, a Brebeuf teacher, and a Brebeuf mom will be traveling to the Dayspring Center (a homeless shelter for families) to serve lunch and engage in conversation with the staff and residents. This will be an opportunity for our group to learn more about homelessness in Indianapolis and volunteer outside of their required service hours. This will be the third year of our partnership with Dayspring and we have found it to provide truly meaningful service experiences for our students.
Our first trip this semester will be Thursday, January 12.  We leave school at 11:00 a.m. and return to school by 2:00 p.m. which results in the students missing 2-3 periods of the school day.
You or your student can sign up for a trip to Dayspring here.
Please contact Nick Klingler at nklingler@brebeuf.org with any questions regarding our weekly trips to Dayspring.
