A $240,000 grant from the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana Foundation will establish a program at the University of New Orleans for first-generation students who intend to pursue careers in healthcare. The goal of the UNO First-Generation Pathways to Healthcare Program is to help create a pool of medical professionals from a variety of backgrounds who will be able to thrive in their chosen fields.

Chemistry Department Engages Youth at STEM Fest

On Saturday, October 14th, the New Orleans Saints and Pelicans hosted their annual STEM Fest at the Caesar’s Superdome and Smoothie King Center. With more than 5000 attendees, the fest featured interactive demonstrations from industry, education and community partners to promote STEM education and awareness.

UNO Physics Club Holds Annular Eclipse Watch
|
The Physics Club hosted a public event on Saturday, October 14th in front of the Earl K. Long Library to celebrate the annular eclipse. A rare astronomical event, an annular eclipse happens when the moon is at its furthest from the Earth and passes in front of the sun, leaving a "ring of fire" in the sky. Attendees were able to rent special solar glasses to get brief looks at the sun to see the progression of the moon passing over it. The Physics Club also had demonstrations, including a how-to on making pinhole cameras.

| University of New Orleans Mathematician Awarded $800K Grant from National Science Foundation
|
University of New Orleans math professor Peter Bierhorst has received an $800,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to further his research in quantum entanglement, a phenomenon whereby entangled microscopic particles can be separated by great distances and yet appear to act in concert instantaneously.

Martin O’Connell, professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, and Meg Uzee O’Connell received a research grant from the Barataria Terrebonne National Estuary Program for their research proposal titled, “Survey for tilapia (Oreochromis sp.) in the Port Sulphur 2009 rotenone impact zone." The purpose of this research is to revisit a 14-year-old project involving Dr. O’Connell’s Nekton Research Laboratory multi-year survey for the presence of this invasive fish species in the Post Sulphur region of Plaquemines Parish.

UNO Graduate Student Earns Knauss Fellowship
|
University of New Orleans graduate student Amanda Kirkland is one of 85 students in the nation named to the 2024 class of the John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship program. Kirkland, who studies marine biology, is pursuing a doctoral degree in biological sciences.
