There is a line in the prayers of the people we used for the month of July that stuck with me, maybe it stuck with you as well. Each week as we joined in prayer together, we lifted prayers “for the faces we see every day but whose stories we do not know.” It is a prayer that reminds us that every day there are those in our midst that we see, we pass, we may or may not fully notice but who we are connected to by simply sharing space together in this gift of home, the earth, we have been given. It is a prayer that reminds us that we all have a story and there are stories we do not know.
Over the past couple of years, Parkway Hills UMC has lived into two goals named at one of our mission and ministry days apart together. As a church family, we have intentionally shared our story and been a presence in our community. Some wonderful ministry opportunities have come from these named goals, from videos sent out via social media to participating in community events such as the Scarecrow Festival. This year we will add to this goal list by continuing in prayer for those faces we see every day but whose stories we do not know by invitationally offering a place for everyone. It all begins this month with our August “Name Tag Month.” This is your chance to get to know those who share in worship with you each week but whose stories you may not know! We’ve got lots of other ideas for the year from newly designed visitor information, a “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” party, a monthly meet and greet, some “invite a friend” challenges through the year, and much more. So stay tuned!
In worship each week we will continue the theme by focusing on some of those lesser known stories and characters in scripture (or maybe we know the story but we tend to only focus on one character). The hope is that we are all challenged to think about those faces around us whose stories we do not know, make connections, and invite them into a bigger story, the story of a God working in the midst of God’s people to redeem and restore. I am excited to continue my faith journey with you and excited to be part of the mission and ministry and Parkway Hills as we share our story, are a presence in our community, and offer a place for everyone!

Promotion Sunday
What a joy to come to Worship and celebrate all these young people! And to honor our educators!
Our students departing for college in a week or so helped lead Sunday School for the elementary Kids, who were promoted on to the next grade.
In Worship Service, prayers were said and Communion was shared with our students and teachers.
Elementary students enjoyed a waterslide splash party in the afternoon, while the junior high and high schoolers danced under the black lights in the Youth Suite.
We look forward to sharing God's work with our students this year. Please join us in helping to teach, to mentor, and to live by example for these youngest disciples here at Parkway Hills.

The Choctaw Mission, on the Reservation in Philadelphia, has existed since the 1800s as a ministry of the United Methodist Conference in Mississippi. The Mission cares and works with the Choctaw people to enrich the lives of children, young people, and families through community outreach, spriritual enrichment, and leadership development. Because children make up the majority of the 11,000 Tribal Members' population, the Mission's purpose for the young people is to provide spiritual and emotional wellbeing to build self-esteem, develop leadership skills, and nurture life skills for a brighter future.
PHUMC's August Communion Offering, $708 to date, supports the Mississippi UMC Choctaw Mission.
