Y Camp Academy

Traditional before and after school childcare has been redesigned as “Y CAMP ACADEMY” in light of schools going 100% virtual. YMCA facilities have been converted to learning centers supporting virtual school, ensuring campers log on to class, remain attentive and have access to homework assistance within a safe day camp environment. Y Camp Academy safety protocols were made possible through a collaboration between YUSA, the CDC, Environmental Health Engineers, and the American Camping Association.

Partnering with school districts and increased demand has prompted three new Y Camp Academy sites at the Los Cerritos, Kettering, and Twain elementary schools. Refer to YMCA branch web pages for updates. YMCA’s support of remote learning has been a critical solution for parents, garnering much public interest. Youth & Government

YMCA Youth & Government, Model Legislature and Court to stay in the LBC

Due to the health crisis, the statewide Y&G program will be modified this year, staying local and includes a virtual format. Remaining in Long Beach while modeling municipal government will provide opportunities to engage with local leaders, celebrate the Long Beach communities and foster interaction between high schoolers throughout Long Beach and surrounding communities. While the foundation of the program remains largely intact, the structure and logistics will be reframed to meet health guidelines and to the extent possible, take advantage of local amenities and characteristics. During a four-day conference, teens will participate in bill development, bill hearings, debates, legislative sessions and a general assembly. Staying active is more important than ever!

The YMCA continues to provide healthy and safe fitness outlets. YMCA group exercise is under the tent, functional fitness has been moved outside, swimming pools remain open (functioning within health guidelines) and YMCA virtual fitness content is readily available to members choosing to stay at home. Whether you are visiting your YMCA, or you are taking advantage of YMCA virtual platforms, discovering new ways to remain active and fit is more important than ever.

Community Development exemplifies Social Responsibility

Building on their outreach priorities,
the Community Development branch continues to diligently and creatively innovate cause-driven programming serving under-resourced neighborhoods. Two examples include leveraging community partners such as Food Finders, and the American University of Health and Sciences combatting food insecurities supporting 1500 families. Also, a donation from Human IT, the Center for Economic Inclusion and coordinated by Councilmember Rex Richardson. Enhancing digital access, 70 Chromebooks were gifted to the YMCA Youth Institute participants and their families, in support of virtual education.
