From the Desk of the Educator |
March always feels like a turning point in our 4‑H year. Projects are coming to life, clubs are gearing up for spring activities, and you can feel the excitement building as members, families, and volunteers start looking ahead to what’s next. It’s a month where early planning begins to meet real progress — and that energy is one of my favorite parts of working alongside this community.
In this month’s Harbinger, you’ll find important reminders, upcoming events, and opportunities to help you stay connected and informed. Whether you’re helping a young person explore a new project area, coordinating club plans, or simply trying to keep track of what’s coming up, I hope these updates support you in the role you play within 4‑H.
Thank you for the time, care, and enthusiasm you bring to Ozaukee County 4‑H. The experiences our youth have — big and small — are made possible because of your involvement.
If questions come up or you need assistance, please feel welcome to reach out. I am always glad to connect.
PS - I hope to see you tonight at the Knellsville Skate Night in Cedarburg!
- Thanks, Abi, 4-H Educator - Ozaukee County 4-H

Welcome Area 14 Area Extension Director as of March 2nd |
Hello 4‑H families, volunteers, and leaders,
My name is Pattie Carroll, and I am honored to introduce myself as the new Area Extension Director for Area 14, serving Columbia, Dodge, Fond du Lac, Ozaukee, and Washington Counties. It is a privilege to step into this role and support the outstanding work happening across our counties through UW–Madison Division of Extension.
As many of you know, 4‑H is built on a foundation of relationships between youth and caring adults, between communities and volunteers, and between Extension and the people we serve. These relationships are at the heart of why 4‑H continues to thrive, innovate, and create welcoming spaces where young people can learn, lead, and grow.
One of the great strengths of 4‑H in our counties is the dedication and leadership of the 4‑H leaders. Your energy, creativity, and endless hours of volunteer time ensure that 4‑H is not just a program, but a community. I am grateful for the work you do to strengthen clubs, mentor youth, and support educational opportunities that prepare young people for bright futures.
In my role as Area Extension Director, my priority is to support our educators and programs, strengthen partnerships, and ensure that 4‑H and Extension continue to meet local needs in meaningful ways that align with Extension's mission and vision. I look forward to learning more about each county’s unique strengths, traditions, and opportunities. Most importantly, I look forward to meeting many of you, our leaders, youth, parents, and community partners, who make this work possible.
Thank you for the warm welcome I’ve already received. I am excited about what we will accomplish together and eager to support the incredible 4‑H work happening across Area 14.
Here’s to a new season of learning, connection, and growing together.
Sincerely,
Pattie Carroll
Area Extension Director – Area 14

Partner Highlight: Ozaukee County Fair |
As we move into spring project season, it’s helpful for families to understand how 4‑H and the Ozaukee County Fair work together—and where our roles are different.
4‑H, through UW–Madison Extension, supports year‑round learning. We focus on youth development, hands‑on project education, and building strong volunteer teams who guide young people throughout the entire year. Whether it’s project meetings, leadership opportunities, or community programs, 4‑H is centered on growth, learning, and skill‑building.
The Ozaukee County Agricultural Society (Fair Board), on the other hand, is a separate nonprofit organization responsible for planning and operating the Ozaukee County Fair, a year-round adventure for the board members! The Fair Board manages the facilities, selects and appoints superintendents, hires judges, oversees show logistics, and coordinates everything needed to make the Fair run smoothly.
This time of year, you’ll see both groups getting busy—just in different ways. Fair Superintendents begin outlining show needs and preparing for exhibit season, while 4‑H volunteers focus on spring project learning and creating meaningful hands‑on experiences for youth.
Both organizations care deeply about supporting young people. We simply play different, complementary roles in helping them succeed. Over the next few months, we’ll share more articles to help clarify how 4‑H and the County Fair partner, overlap, and differ, so families and volunteers have a clear understanding of who does what, and how we can all work together for a great learning year and a fantastic Fair.
