COVID, Flu, Allergies: What’s the Difference?
Both COVID-19 and the flu can have varying degrees of severity, ranging from no symptoms at all (asymptomatic) to severe symptoms. Common symptoms that COVID-19 and the flu share include:
- Fever or feeling feverish/chills
- Cough
- Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- Fatigue
- Sore throat
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Muscle pain or body aches
- Headache
- Vomiting and diarrhea (though this is more common in children than adults)
Other signs and symptoms of COVID-19, different from flu, may include change in or loss of taste or smell. Keep in mind that fall allergies in Louisiana can also last through November. Unlike COVID-19 or the flu, seasonal allergies don’t typically result in a fever, chills, or shortness of breath. Here are the most common allergy symptoms:
- Sneezing
- Itchy nose, eye, or mouth
- Runny, stuffy nose
- Watery, red, or swollen eyes
- Cough and postnasal drip
- Dry, itchy skin
If your student is feeling any symptoms of COVID, the flu, or allergies, they can call Student Health at 504-865-3326 (available M–F, 9 a.m.– 4 p.m.) for a consultation. Virtual healthcare is also available to students 24/7 via their smartphone or computer.

Thanksgiving, Witness
A message from Interim Vice President for Mission and Identity Tom Ryan, Ph.D.
It is with mixed feelings that I write today, the 33rd anniversary of the murder of six Salvarodan Jesuits, their housekeeper and her daughter. They died for their commitment to the poor, which often involves critiquing the powerful. That event changed Loyola's geography—we now have a Peace Quad commemorating their deaths. I’m sure my own commitments fall short of what it would take to be a martyr. Yet, I am inspired by the witness of those martyrs, a word from Greek that itself means “witness.”
| |
Today is also just over a week out from Thanksgiving. As I reflect on what I’m thankful for, I’m thinking of the Salvadoran martyrs and their witness to what a life informed by Catholic and Ignatian values can look like. But there are other ways of living out those values. Here at Loyola, I feel surrounded by a cloud of witnesses—our faculty and staff, our amazing students and their families—and their commitments in diverse and creative ways to truth, goodness, and beauty. I am grateful to be here at Loyola among the next generation of witnesses who will find ways to work for the flourishing of all people and, indeed, of all creation.
