Notes from Dept Head 📝
Friend,
It was great to have an opportunity to get together with faculty, staff, and graduate students on a beautiful Reid Park evening last month. The past 18 months have been devoid of such gatherings, but one can’t forget how the soul is nourished by sitting around a table chatting with old colleagues and friends and meeting new ones. Many thanks to all who joined the festivities.
We are pleased to welcome two new assistant professors of practice to our instructional team: Dr. Kevin Scriber III will be bringing his environmental biology expertise to join Dr. Ken Smith and the growing ENVS faculty team at our Northwest Agriculture and Forestry University microcampus location in Yangling China, where he will teach courses on the biology of environmental systems and statistical methods of data analysis. Dr. Katrina Henry joins us here in Tucson, bringing a depth of expertise in physical environmental science, hydrogeology, and energy-environment interactions.
As always, a lot is happening at ENVS and we’re happy to get the word out there. Congratulations to Dr. Karletta Chief, who will be directing UArizona’s new Indigenous Resilience Center, and to Dr. Katrina Dontsova, who recently authored and edited a new AGU book entitled “Biogeochemical Cycles: Ecological Drivers and Environmental Impact”.

ENVS + Native Voices In STEM ColaborationThe Native Voices in STEM (NVIS) seminar series began informally in Spring 2018 and became formalized in Spring 2019. NVIS highlights Native American and indigenous scientists, engineers, educators, leaders, and activists while offering students an opportunity to network and learn about the research and careers directly from these leaders. NVIS was born out of the NSF-NRT Indigenous Food, Energy & Water Security and Sovereignty graduate training program led by Dr. Karletta Chief, ENVS Associate Professor and Extension Specialist.
