Can't Sleep? Try Feldenkrais!

Sleep struggles are not just a human problem. There is plenty of evidence that other animals experience some form of insomnia. As a result of the sleeplessness, they tend to gain more weight, learn more slowly, and lose their balance more often. Pretty similar to the effects that we suffer when we are sleep deprived!
Â
So why is sleep so important and why do so many of us suffer from the lack of it, having regular broken nights of sleep, and struggling to fall asleep even when we are already tired?
Â
In this month's SenseAbility we explore some of these questions through the lens of the Feldenkrais Method® of somatic education, trying to understand how learning and our nervous system play a role in our ability to sleep well and whether a movement based practice like the Feldenkrais Method® of movement can help us sleep more comfortably, and more consistently.
Â
We interview Paris Kern, during which she explains some of the reasons why our sleep habits can become so disturbed, what to do about it in the moment, and also what we can do during the day to help us sleep better at night. It's a great interview with some unique insight into this subject from Paris, who is also a Sounder Sleep® teacher as well as an experienced trainer in the Feldenkrais Method® of somatic education.Â
Â
We also have two amazing articles written by Robert Black and Hannah Vo-Dinh. Rob discusses his own experiences with sleep and sleeplessness, as well as how he has found novel and effective ways to work with for clients who suffer from sleep issues, including helping them create sleep cycle charts. Hannah, also a Sounder Sleep teacher, shares from her own personal experience around chronic pain and it's effect on sleep and how we can use movement and the experience of physical comfort to move away from chronic pain, towards a better night's sleep.Â

Wishing you a peaceful sleep,

How To Have Better Quality Sleep |
This month the newest member of the FGNA communication team, Michelle Poston, interviews Feldenkrais™ Trainer and Sounder Sleep™ teacher Paris Kern about how to improve the quality of our sleep. She discusses how sleep is a learned behavior and how we can learn to improve our sleep with the help of some simple techniques employed by the Sounder Sleep system, which was developed by Feldenkrais Practitioner Michael Krugman to help himself with chronic insomnia. Paris shares some of her wisdom on the subject of poor sleep and also provides a short movement lesson, designed to help your sleep improve.Â

Getting Control of Your Sleep Cycle |
An Article by Rob Black
Are you experiencing difficulties with your sleep? Do you find yourself waking up in the middle of the night and struggling to return to sleep? Perhaps you're having trouble falling asleep initially, or you find it challenging to wake up in the morning?
Before diving into a plethora of techniques, gadgets, apps or medications to address your sleep issues, consider taking a step back to track your personal sleep cycle over the course of a week or two.
I've had the privilege of working with several students who faced regular or occasional sleep challenges, and what we discovered was a common thread: they weren't fully aware of their sleep patterns. So, we embarked on a journey to better understand and visualize their individual sleep cycles..

An Article by Hannah Vo-Dinh
Pain can degrade our quality of life in many ways. For example, it can undermine our capacity for pleasure, interfere with our relationships, and make it difficult to work. More insidiously, it can decrease the quantity and compromise the quality of our sleep, creating a vicious cycle. This is because impaired sleep can in turn increase our stress levels, lower our pain thresholds, and elevate our risk for painful injuries and diseases.Â
In sum, poor quality sleep leads to more pain, and more pain leads to less sleep. Fortunately, therapies exist which can disrupt this positive feedback loop. The Feldenkrais Method® of somatic education and the Sounder Sleep System™ are approaches which can relieve pain and facilitate deeper, higher-quality sleep. Although these techniques are typically taught separately, they work especially well in concert..
