In the Clinical Trials module, students will explore the steps in the "scientific method" by studying the process of Clinical Trials. Students will learn how drugs, treatments, and medical devices are tested and evaluated for safety and effectiveness. This real-world application will teach students to ask well-defined questions, design an experiment, and use critical thinking in their own classroom investigations.
“Learning objects” in every module enable students to guide their own learning while reinforcing critical thinking about and application of required science standards.

  • Backpack Adventures – A science fiction story built upon an initial smallpox clinical trial
  • Meet the Scientist – Biographies of scientists influential in the history of clinical trials

  • Real Science Review – Guided, simulated peer review of pre-clinical trials for a new pain reliever modified for middle school readability

Spanish Translations
English language learners now have even more opportunities to explore with the publication of translations for “Infectious Disease & Vaccination” and “Ecology” modules. The Spanish versions of “Essential Knowledge” and “Make a Note of That” learning objects as well as the pre and posttests for these modules enable both students and teachers to enhance the learning outcomes in ESL and bilingual classes.

We invite you to register to incorporate this exciting new curriculum into your classes. Registration will allow you to drop our modules as SCORM packages into your school’s existing Learning Management System (LMS) or allow you to use our LMS.

Teacher Professional Development
The PEER Program is providing distance professional development opportunities this summer. Synchronous (real-time) Zoom sessions will allow participants to explore the One Health curriculum while interacting with the presenters and other teachers in attendance. Teachers will earn six CPE credits while developing strategies for implementing the One Health curriculum in their classrooms. Asynchronous (self-paced), micro-credential sessions are also available. Teachers may choose from a variety of One Health-related activities to complete based on interests and time. A digital CPE certificate will be awarded upon completion of each section.

About PEER
The Partnership for Environmental Education and Rural Health (PEER) is a Youth Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) promotion program utilizing veterinary medicine and environmental issues to stimulate youth interest in learning about their own health (One Health). The project has reached 20,250 teachers in all 50 states and 2,046,250 students over its 20+ year existence. PEER has received both National Institutes of Health (NIH) and National Science Foundation (NSF) grant monies, as well as funding from Texas A&M University and private foundations. These funds have allowed PEER: to develop a website hosting standard-based science and agriculture sciences lessons and scientist and veterinarian videos; provide teacher professional development; and near-peer mentoring of K-12 students.

and by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS).
