District News: An E-Newsletter for Roseville Area Schools Staff and Families

News for March 2, 2022

From the Superintendent
March 2, 2022
Good Afternoon Roseville Area Schools Families and Staff,
With the recent change in guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on masking indoors, we will bring a recommendation to the school board to consider at their March 8 school board meeting to modify our masking procedures in Roseville Area Schools.
We will recommend that beginning Monday, March 14 masks will no longer be required on school buses or in school buildings for staff, visitors and students in early childhood through grade 12, as well as adult learners. This change coincides with students at Harambee returning from intersession and will apply to Community Education programming. The majority of students in the district will return from spring break on March 21.
Masks will be required for students and staff who test positive for COVID-19 and choose to return to school on days 6 through 10 following a positive test or onset of symptoms. If they are not able to wear a mask, then they must isolate at home for 10 days. We ask that families continue to monitor for symptoms using the daily screening tool, and students should stay home if they have symptoms and test before returning to school. Home test kits are available from every school.
I know that this is a milestone that some people will welcome, and some will not. Roseville Area Schools will be supportive of all staff, students and visitors in our schools who choose to continue wearing a mask while at school. We have carefully reviewed other school districts, cities, and counties as they updated their COVID-19 mitigation strategies. We have continuously reviewed CDC, Minnesota Department of Health, and Ramsey County Public Health written guidance. We have consulted with our MDH Regional Support Team and Ramsey County public health officials, in addition to listening to input from our school community. We have used all these resources to make an informed and timely decision regarding our proposal to the school board on March 8 to rescind the requirement for masks in school buildings.
Thank you for all that you have done to make our schools safe and healthy places to learn.
Sincerely,
Jenny Loeck, Ed.D
Superintendent

District News
Participation in the Minnesota Student Survey
The Roseville Area School District is asking students in grades 5, 8, 9 and 11 to participate in the 2022 Minnesota Student Survey (MSS). The MSS is conducted in schools across our state every three years.
Questions on this anonymous survey are about many topics relating to young people’s lives. The survey asks about how well school is going, future plans, out-of-school activities, physical and mental health, relationships, substance use and more. High school students are asked about sexual behavior. This useful information about their thoughts and behaviors helps communities and schools develop effective programs and provide better services. High-level results from the survey will be made public in the fall. No student-specific results will be made public.
The Minnesota Student Survey (MSS) will be administered in Roseville Area Schools between March and May 2022.
If you have questions about the survey, please contact: Lindsay Most by email: lindsay.most@isd623.org or by phone at 651-604-3742.
You have the right to review a copy of the survey. Find your student’s grade below and click on the link to see the survey.
This survey is anonymous. To prevent individuals or families from being identified, students do not provide their names, student identification numbers, or other personal information.
This survey is voluntary. You may choose to have your child not take the survey by completing the form below. Students may also decline to take any part of the survey or the whole survey. They are informed of that option by staff.
If you do not wish to have your child participate in the Minnesota Student Survey (MSS), complete this online form or call Lindsay Most (651-604-3742).

RAHS Social Studies Teacher Ira Sanders Named Semifinalist for Minnesota Teacher of the Year
Ira Sanders, a social studies teacher at Roseville Area High School, is among 25 semifinalists for the honor of 2022 Minnesota Teacher of the Year. In late March, a selection panel made up of 22 education, community and
business leaders will review videos and portfolios to choose about 10 finalists. The 2022 Minnesota Teacher of the Year will be announced at a celebration on Sunday, May 1.
Mr. Sanders is the subject of a short film, "Ira," that premiered in New York last October, with recent screenings in Portland, Ore., and the Trylon Cinema in Minneapolis. The film will be shown in Los Angeles later this month. The film documents Mr. Sanders' experience as a commodities trader at the World Trade Center for 15 years before September 11, 2001, and his path to becoming an educator, which he described as a lifelong goal
Ms. Hauser, RAMS band teacher
RAMS Band Teacher Katie Hauser Named a Schmitt Music’s 2020-2021 Educator of the Year
In an effort to recognize the work of outstanding school music educators in the Midwest, Schmitt Music and the Schmitt Director Center set out to find the best of the best. They honor exceptional band and/or orchestra educators in three categories: elementary, middle school, and high school.
Ms. Hauser teaches students who are in their third or fourth year of playing an instrument, and her teaching goals with each class include building strong relationships with her incoming students,
making sure her students’ foundational knowledge on their band instruments is solid, getting students excited about making music,
helping them see the beauty involved in ensemble music-making,
and getting them to high school band.
