Wishes for a meaningful Memorial Day!
This week, we'll be highlighting programs available to you as an incoming student. We have Venture to Volunteer, a four day program during Welcome Week where students can connect to the D.C. community through engagement and service. We also have Emerging Eagles, a cohort for incoming students to develop leadership skills through skill building, mentorship, and community engagement. Also available is American University’s Hillel peer-mentorship program for incoming students. Finally, we have Startup & Stand Out, a virtual two-week celebration of entrepreneurship taking place July 8 - 24.
Last week, you received an email from First Year Advising about the new student registration webinar dates. Next week you’ll hear from you academic advisor on June 4 with your suggested course letter, so keep an eye on your email!
As this is a holiday weekend, a reminder that our live chat function is monitored during business hours, so will not be available today to answer questions.

Join the Center for Leadership & Community Engagement in Venture to Volunteer (V2V)!
Formally known as Explore DC, this Welcome Week program brings our New Eagles into the community for neighborhood exploration and service. Our New Eagles will be able to meet fellow students who are passionate about community engagement and meet upperclassmen volunteer leaders who will guide them through the event and their first few days on-campus.
If you are in a unique cohort such as AU Honors, Sakura Scholars, etc., you will NOT be able to participate in V2V due to your orientation schedule. You can find out which programs are considered a unique cohort by clicking the link below.
There is a $25 fee to participate. Registration closes June 7 at 5:00pm.
If you have any questions, please email sarahre@american.edu. You can find more details about V2V by clicking the link below!

Each year, Hillel runs a special peer mentorship program for freshmen and transfer students called First Year Students of Hillel (FYSH). Incoming students are matched with returning students who share their interests or hobbies. These peer mentors help new students get acclimated to life at AU and get involved with the campus Jewish community.
We conduct a variety of programs specifically designed to engage new students and to facilitate relationship-building between new students and their mentors. Past FYSH events have included Shabbat bagel brunches, sushi-making, softball games, and service projects.
Our staff routinely hear from first-year students that the FYSH program made their transition to college easier, and many FYSH participants remain close friends with their mentors years later!

| Virtual: July 8 - 24, 2024
Startup and Standout is a two-week long online/virtual celebration of entrepreneurship and innovation. Through entrepreneurship panels, workshops, and our Startup & Standout Solution Slam Pitch Competition (for $10,000 cash), AU students learn from, interact with, and become confident, impactful entrepreneurs. The program is designed to promote creativity, critical thinking, and perseverance, and to encourage risk-taking and problem-solving.
Through the Startup & Standout Solution Slam Pitch Competition, you will work in teams of three to four students to identify a pressing social problem and create a solution to benefit society.
You’ll develop your new idea into a two-minute video pitch for a new product or service designed to make meaningful change, and you’ll submit that video online. Judges from the AU Community will select the finalists. The top three finishers will share $10,000 in prize money!
