Hello All,
It has been very nice to meet you and see you at events like Orientation and the Scavenger Hunt. I am new to campus and to Rochester so I empathize with many of you for whom that is also true. It can be both hard and exciting to navigate so many changes at once.
I was walking across campus with Dr. Erica Haskell (the Director of the School of Performing Arts) in a sunny moment and she and I discussed how we both love the sense of renewal and excitement the fall semester brings. It reminded me of a brief moment in the play Proof by David Auburn where the character Robert, a math professor, talks about how much he loves the same time of year:
“Students coming back, bookstores full, everyone busy…
Yeah I like it. I like watching the students. Wondering what they’re gonna buy, what
they’re gonna read. What kind of ideas they’ll come up with when they settle down and get to work…”
You are already at work preparing songs or monologues, or tuning and practicing your instruments, or interviewing for Tech Crew, all while going to class, making connections, friends, and figuring out how to get where you need to be. Very soon we’ll also be offering you exciting opportunities to see all different kinds of performances both here on campus as well as in and around Rochester. Stay tuned!
The weather the past few days has been both beautiful and stormy—not unlike starting a new creative process or a new academic year. Sometimes you’ll have easy, breezy days. And sometimes it will rain on you when your umbrella is in your dorm. When those rainy days happen, I hope you can be resilient. When you are auditioning, even if you don’t get the part or chair you want, you can still “book the room”. That essentially means trying your best, having fun, and being memorable as yourself. How can you be someone people will want to work with in the future?
In the hustle and bustle of it all, I trust that you will treat yourselves, your peers, our faculty, our staff, and our spaces–everyone and everything in this performing arts ecosystem–with the care and respect they deserve. It is up to us to create the environment in which we can all thrive.
I have a challenge for you: as performing artists in an increasingly artificially intelligent world, how can you be refreshingly human?
I can’t wait to see what you come up with. Please let me know how I can help.
Have an excellent semester,

| PRFN 335: Musical Theatre Scene Study
Fall 2025
Taught by Professor Christopher Ryan
Monday/Wednesday
3:00-4:15pm
SHED 1140 (Dance Studio)
This course provides an in-depth study of musical theatre performance. Students will utilize textual analysis, script research, and character development to hone their skills in the rehearsal and performance of scenes, duets, trios, and group numbers. A variety of musical theatre texts, from the Golden Age to the contemporary repertoire, will be used to integrate the skills of acting, singing, and dancing together into a single performance. Students can expect a course that is highly experiential, but supported by readings, lecture, and discussion. By the end of the semester, students will have gained experience and understanding of the styles and conventions related to several significant historical periods and genres of musical theatre. Planned repertoire includes: A Secretary is Not a Toy, Morning Glow, I Want It All, I’m Only Thinking of Him, Take Me or Leave Me, I’ll Cover You, and Freak Flag. Students will have the opportunity to learn principal, supporting, and ensemble roles, and will present their work in a showcase at the end of the semester.
