Rocky Mountain Fur Trade Presentation April 6 at Ranch House

We have all heard about the Gold Rush that brought tens of thousands of people into Colorado, but did you know that decades before the Rush, fur trappers and traders traveled up the Front Range creeks in search of beaver, perhaps even across Ken-Caryl and up Deer Creek? On Thursday, April 6 at 7 p.m. at the Ranch House, the Ken-Caryl Ranch Historical Society will host Michael Schaubs, living historian and authority, who will present “The 1837 Fort Jackson Trading Camp Inventory: A Typical Outfit for the Plains Indian Trade.” The program, which is open to the public, is based on the actual inventory of a trading party along the Arkansas River. Typical trading protocols will be discussed and reproductions of typical trade goods will be displayed.

Metropolitan District Receives Grant for Splash Pad Enhancements

The Ken-Caryl Ranch Metropolitan District applied for and received a 2017 Local Park and Recreation Grant from Jefferson County Open Space to provide enhancements to the Community Center Splash Pad. Specifically, this grant will allow KCRMD to add some above-ground spray features to encourage interactive play among users. The grant was for $15,000 and will be paired with $30,000 in Conservation Trust Fund dollars, bringing the total to $45,000. KCRMD is in the process of selecting and ordering the new features and expects them to be ready for opening day.

Beacon-Tincup Phase III – Fuel Mitigation Project

Ken-Caryl Ranch Open Space, Colorado State Forest Service and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office will be continuing work on the fuels reduction project at the top of Tincup Hill. The Sheriff's Office will begin work in mid-April with completion by June 15. The project will extend the 31-acre fuel break that was established in 2016 to a total of 45 acres. See Project Map. The objectives of this project are to improve wildfire suppression opportunities, overall forest health and aesthetics of the open space property. During forestry operations, there will be signs posted giving trail users advanced warning that machinery and felling operations are active. Trail closures may be needed occasionally to accommodate equipment use and to provide safety to the public. Any closures will be coordinated by Ken-Caryl Ranch Open Space Rangers. For further information or questions, please contact Open Space staff at 303-979-1876, ext. 170.
