Frank, MD, is an endowed tenured professor of Radiation Oncology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, the Medical Director of MD Anderson’s Proton Therapy Center, and leader of both the Proton Therapy Program for head and neck cancer and the Prostate Brachytherapy Program. He is among the first, if not the first, to use Intensity-Modulated Proton Therapy (IMPT) to treat head and neck tumors. Dr. Frank has published hundreds of peer-reviewed articles and has run research studies on oropharyngeal cancer and prostate cancer. Dr. Frank’s expertise in MRI radiotherapy has led to the development and FDA approval of a novel positive-contrast implantable marker for use in MRI-guided prostate brachytherapy. As founder of the company, C4 Imaging, Dr. Frank has developed the FDA approved MRI marker technology at MD Anderson, currently holds over 30 national and international patents, and has continued MRI-Assisted Radiosurgery (MARS) at MD Anderson for the treatment of prostate cancer. He has funding from the NIH, the Prostate Cancer Foundation, the Texas Ignition Fund, Hitachi and MD Anderson, and he has also raised three rounds of private equity financing to advance C4 technology. Dr. Frank currently serves on several Boards, including the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), Alliance for Proton Therapy Access, Jack and Jill Late Cancer Stage Foundation (JAJF), Breakthrough Chronic Care, is the past President and Chairman of the Board of the American Brachytherapy Society and the Chairman of C4 Imaging. Prior to his medical career, Steven served in the United States Navy as a submarine officer and navy diver on the fast attack USS BATFISH (SSN-681). The Epstein School was critical to his intellectual and spiritual education process by learning the Hebrew language, prayers and Jewish moral values. The strong academic and nurturing environment of the Epstein School provided him the educational foundation which has been a cornerstone of his work ethic. In addition, the Epstein School provided him with life-long friendships that continue to be so important to him today. Dr. Frank is married to Dr. Ivy Empel Frank, and has four beautiful daughters; Hailey Jane, Maddie, Lila, and Charlee.

Marla Snyder Barkoff (Class of 1989)- Dr. Marla Snyder Barkoff is a proud Epstein alumnus, mother of 2 spirited children, a wife to a wonderful guy she met at Camp Barney Medintz, a tireless doctor, and a sufferer of multiple autoimmune diseases.  During her 10 years attending Epstein, she learned the following important lessons: building a Jewish home is the key to her cultural identity, girls can do and become anything they aspire to be and math and science are cool (thank you Laura Bidlack!). Her love of science led her to study rare monkeys in East Africa, to research Hepatitis B in West Africa, and eventually to become an Endocrinologist.  Her true professional purpose, however, came unexpectedly when she became acutely ill from a rare immune disease at the age of 38.  She was quickly thrust into the medical unknown with only her scientific training and fierce determination to keep her afloat.  Once Marla was able to research what was making her sick, she vowed to help others.  At the age of 40, she opened her own medical practice dedicated to treating people with the same rare disease that she has.  Not only does she bring a unique perspective as both the doctor and the patient, but she provides a tremendous empathy and hope to people who are suffering.  Marla is grateful to The Epstein School for instilling in her that dreams and capabilities have no limits and that science is really, really cool!

Dr. Weiss currently is co-Principal Investigator on a federal IES grant exploring the impact of North Carolina’s third grade reading intervention, Read to Achieve. She also works on the North Carolina Digital Learning Plan evaluation team. She holds a doctorate and master's in public policy from Duke University, bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Georgia while a Foundation Fellow, and was a Fulbright Fellow in South Korea. She and her husband have 2 children (3-year-old twin girls) and they are expecting their third child.

Amy Koonin (Class of 2004)- Amy is the Marketing Content Manager for cloud-based waste solution platform, Rubicon Global. It is at Rubicon that Amy conceptualized and now hosts “The Town Haul” podcast. Each episode highlights a different individual with a passion for moving the needle in the realm of environmental sustainability.  Ranking as one of iTunes Top 10 most popular business podcasts, her show is successfully shedding light on a bevy of different issues ranging from food waste to ocean conservation. Over the last year, Koonin was honored as one of Atlanta’s “Power 30 under 30”, received AMA’s 2018 Digital Marketing Growth award, and the Content Marketing Institute’s “Top Corporate Blog of 2018.” When Amy isn’t in the office, she’s enjoying her time at home in Serenbe with her fiancé Michael and their dog, Myra.

Rebecca Friedman (Class of 2010)- Rebecca is a recent Suma Cum Laude graduate of the University of Georgia. She graduated with a degree in International Business and Supply Chain/Operations Management along with a minor in Spanish. Throughout her time in Athens, she was extremely involved in both her sorority, Sigma Delta Tau, and the surrounding community. Some of her roles include Vice President of SDT, Broadway and Theater Management Intern at The Classic Center and Age Group Lead Swim Coach for Athens Bulldog Swim Club. Despite having a passion for each position in its own capacity, her true passion lied in working for The Walt Disney Company. After completing the Disney College Program in 2017, Rebecca knew she belonged at Walt Disney World Resort. Just a few months before graduation her dreams came true when she was offered a position as a Professional Intern for Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings. To date, she has been a part of 30 weddings across Disney property and is currently in the process of helping to plan many more happily ever afters.
