A TIME-HONORED AND TRADITIONAL FIRST FRIDAY
In a Town Hall meeting held last week on the first Friday of the school year, Academy students approved a motion to hold Mountain Day this year and in keeping with both tradition and Robert's Rules of Order, engaged in the democratic process of choosing team name categories, and then team names. Having accomplished their business, the meeting adjourned and teams worked together to name themselves. Students and faculty members then boarded buses to Zoar Outdoor for a day of rafting and picnicking (see article at right).
The themes chosen for team names this year (through a complex process of voting and elimination) are Apple ringtones, Yankee Candle scents, and classic novels renamed to evoke winter.  For the 2016 - 2017 school year, the teams are:
Of Ice and Creepy Door Men
Sweaterhouse - 5
Slow-Rising Musky Kilimanjaro Stars
Cosmic Cherries on Snow Country for Old Men
To Chill and Mockingbrrrr: Detergent Duck's Quest for Marimba
Frankensnow's Cream-Colored Duck
The Night Owls of Shivering Heights
WORKS BY ACADEMY ART TEACHER
ANDRAE GREEN AT
STCC GALLERY;
OPENING RECEPTION SEPTEMBER 13

Andrae Green has an upcoming exhibition at Springfield Technical Community College where he will be showing an entirely new body of work. He is quite proud of this new direction and hopes to share it with our community. The opening reception will be on Tuesday, September 13, 5-7. From the gallery website, following is from the artist's statement:

This exhibition titled Through the Looking Glass borrows its name from the classic Lewis Caroll book. This body of work is a major departure from the subject matter I dealt with previously where I explored existential issues through the mechanics of looking and seeing. This current body of work differs in that I am now looking externally as opposed to internally. I’m now interested in the senses that are not quantifiable which we use to perceive the world: such as intuition, clairvoyance, and other feelings that lie outside of the physical realm. Fragility and impermanence are a constant in a three-dimensional reality, and these works show those very slippages that occur due to interruptions by the metaphysical world.

Through Lewis Carroll’s story of “Alice in Wonderland”, I found an imaginative playground where I could invent a fantasy world that serves as the backdrop of my paintings. While there may not be any recognizable characters from the story, the themes of rabbit holes, chasing time and quantum entanglement remain the same. The works are tableaus of my inner and outer worlds, and less about mere physical likeness. The world around me, with all of its spiritual and physical ideologies, becomes the “wonderland”, and I become “Alice”.

Rafting Day (and Hiking!)
As we held our all-school Rafting Day last Friday, some students and faculty members enjoyed a hike instead. It was a gorgeous day to get to know one another, celebrate the beauty of our rural setting and appreciate the outdoors.
COMMUNITY SUPPERS
Community Suppers take place at Trinity Church at 17 Severance Street in Shelburne Falls, are scheduled by team, and occur on many Fridays of the school year.
Team leaders will notify members early on during the weeks when their team will be participating - each team serves two community suppers per year.  Students are asked to contribute salad fixings and homemade desserts.
Community Supper dates have been updated on our school calendar to include team assignments.  More details about Community Suppers are on our website, including information about pick-up at Trinity Church.
