| Elizabeth Qian Lands NSF’s Prestigious Early Career Award

Professor Elizabeth Qian has received the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Faculty Early Career Development Program Award (CAREER). This five-year award, totaling over $599,000, will support her group’s work developing new computational methods to support engineering design, as well as educational efforts to train engineers at Georgia Tech and beyond in these cutting-edge methods.

| Space Station Testing Will Evaluate Photovoltaic Materials | Research |
Solar cells account for approximately six percent of the electricity used on Earth; however, in space, they play a significantly larger role, with nearly all satellites relying on advanced solar cells for their power. That’s why Georgia Tech researchers will soon send 18 photovoltaic cells to the International Space Station for a study of how space conditions affect the devices’ operation over time.

| Georgia Tech Launches the Space Research Institute |
The Space Research Institute will connect faculty, students, and staff who share a passion for space exploration and discovery. They will investigate a wide variety of space-related topics, exploring how space influences and intersects with the human experience. The SRI fosters a collaborative community including scientific, engineering, cultural, and commercial research that pursues broadly integrated, innovative projects.
W. Jud Ready, a principal research engineer in GTRI’s Electro-Optical Systems Laboratory, will serve as the inaugural executive director of the Space Research Institute.

| TryEngineering Summer Institute Ignites Young Minds at Georgia Tech |
The TryEngineering Summer Institute, in partnership with IEEE, the Georgia Institute of Technology College of Engineering, and the Georgia Space Grant Consortium, welcomed 20 Georgia high school students to campus earlier this month for a nine-day engineering summer program. These 20 students were selected from more than 200 applicants.
