1,000 gain backpacks with essential supplies, more
Tools for School is about giving Newaygo County kindergartners through12th-graders what they need to succeed.
There were 786 backpacks with essential school supplies distributed at the 15th annual Tools for School Expo on August 7 at the TrueNorth Service Center in Fremont.
“She practically jumped over the table to get” a backpack, one mother said of her daughter.
The Expo also provided 97 haircuts donated by eight stylists, 28 dental exams by Family Health Care, vision exams by Family Health Care, eye screenings by Fremont Lions Club, as well as 25 organizations sharing community resources. The Newaygo County Sheriff’s Office and Newaygo Fire Department also took part.
“I would probably be very stressed out if I wasn’t here,” said Lola, who brought her 11-year-old daughter and 9-year-old son to the Expo.
With 200 more backpacks getting distributed, 1,000 will be served through Tools for School, said Mike Voyt, TrueNorth’s Volunteer and Special Projects Coordinator.
A community service of TrueNorth, Tools for School is sponsored by Choice One Bank, Fremont Area Community Foundation and Gerber Foundation.
