March in the Garden

Notwithstanding an unexpected plunge into freezing temperatures, most spring-flowering plants in the Botanical Garden will be three weeks to a month early this year. Without a doubt, the most impressive of these early bloomers will be our magnolias. Normally opening in late March and April, the Asiatic deciduous magnolia already started showing their finery in the last week of February. Magnolias in this group produce flowers on naked stems, well before leaf emergence. This group is particularly well represented in the David C. Lam Asian Garden and plants in bloom—many of which are large trees, 10 m tall or more—typically elicit much picture taking.

Spring is definitely on the way!

The early selection of West Coast Seeds have arrived. Get a head start with their ‘Gardening Guide 2015.’ Success in the food garden requires a plan. Broad beans, peas, and spinach can be planted now. We also have seeds of popular ornamental plants collected in UBC Botanical Garden by our volunteer Friends of the Garden.

For the Garden Centre, our volunteers are potting up their early spring gems for you to take home for immediate colour and for perennial enjoyment in your garden. Remember that our plants with yellow tags are produced by volunteers and are often varieties that are not available commercially. Purchasing these plants further benefits our UBC Garden as our production costs are minimal.

This year, our focus in the Garden Centre is plants suitable for containers. This will include more dwarf and columnar varieties of woody plants, perennials with good leaf interest when out of bloom and edibles that perform well in containers. We are now receiving deliveries of new treasures every week. We also have Sea Soil to replenish your planters.

Inside the Shop in the Garden, new goods are being unpacked daily. There is no shortage of new whimsical garden ornaments, metalwork and other delights.

With free parking and a relaxed atmosphere, the Shop in the Garden is ideal for thoughtful purchasing decisions. All profits from the Shop help support the Garden. The Shop is open 7 days a week, from 9:30am to 5:00pm.
