A Message from United Way’s New Labor Liaison

Thank you for such a warm welcome. I look forward to getting to know each of you. I wanted to take a moment to share my story.
I grew up locally and graduated from Middletown Area High school in 2004. After graduation, I earned by BA in political science from Mansfield University. My father is Danish so I hold dual citizenship in both the United States and Denmark. I had a unique opportunity to study abroad and attend a graduate school program in Denmark. In 2011, I got my master’s degree in European Studies at Aarhus University Denmark.
After graduate school, I worked on political campaigns and eventually got a position as a Regional Field Director for the Wolf for Governor Campaign and served on the Wolf Transition Team as a Special Assistant to the Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding. Once the secretary was confirmed by the PA Senate, I was offered a spot as a Tax Account Technician (TACT) at the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue. Recently, I was appointed to Harrisburg City Council to fill the remainder of a two-year term.
The TACT position was an AFSCME position. I began attending my local meetings (1981), became a shop steward and was appointed to the e-board. When I learned this position was open, I jumped at the chance to serve my community and my union brothers and sisters.
One of the motivations for taking this position is United Way and our community’s new work in access to health care, school readiness and workforce development, while continuing to support basic needs services.
In the near future, I will reach out to all labor members with engagement opportunities around this important work. I truly believe for these initiatives to be successful we will need the support of teachers, nurses, state employees and more. Working together, we can create a stronger, more vibrant community.
I look forward to working with all of you.

Labor Day of Action November 2017

On November 11, the Harrisburg Region Central Labor Council (CLC) and United Way of the Capital Region mobilized more than 40 local union members, their families and friends for Labor Day of Action. Volunteers completed projects such as sorting food donations and indoor and outdoor clean-up.
Labor Day of Action kicked off with a breakfast sponsored by Capital BlueCross. Adrian Buckner, vice president of community impact for United Way of the Capital Region, spoke to the group about the value of United Way’s partnership with organized labor and labor’s contribution to United Way’s strategic vision.
This year’s event unfortunately had a somber tone. Long-time labor volunteer and supporter Jeff Lebo (United Steel Workers, Local 1668) passed away tragically this fall. Jeff and his family would help every year with Labor Day of Action’s Scouting for Food project at Upper Dauphin Human Services. Dave Scott of United Steel Workers, Local 1668, his daughter Madison, and his girlfriend Jennifer Keefer volunteered this year in Jeff’s honor. Special thanks to Dave and his family for keeping this strong tradition going.
United Way and the Harrisburg Region CLC would like to thank everyone who volunteered for Labor Day of Action. Together, we are making positive changes in our community!
Support United Way and our Community

It’s not too late to make a difference in our community! With just a few weeks left in United Way of the Capital Region’s 2017 fundraising campaign, now is the time to give. Your gift is more than a donation; it’s an investment in our community.
This is an exciting time for our United Way and community. This past summer, we launched new pilot projects in access to health care, school readiness and workforce development to address the root causes of the most pressing needs in the Capital Region. At the same time, we continue to support basic needs services and the work of our program partners.
Our donors are hand-raisers, problem-solvers and community-supporters because this is what it takes to move an individual, a family and a region forward. This is how we LIVE UNITED.
If your workplace is not running a campaign, you can make a pledge online at www.uwcr.org/give or you can contact Dave Madsen at dmadsen@uwcr.org
We’d like to thank all locals and union members who already donated to this year’s United Way campaign. Your support plays a critical role in making the Capital Region strong and vibrant.
