We commend the Governor's response to the Santa Fe school shooting by unveiling Wednesday's action plan. But it is absolutely essential that the state fully fund all of the necessary training and infrastructure improvements needed by every school campus across Texas.
The funding identified in the Governor’s plan equals little more than 1% of our state's Rainy Day Fund. The State of Texas has been blessed by a robust economy and a growing Rainy Day Fund of $11 billion; now is the time to fund school safety for every child. We urge Governor Abbott to lead the charge, demanding more funding for school safety. The costs cannot be carried by our school districts and taxpayers, already overburdened by the rising costs of educating more and more students in need of academic, social, and emotional interventions. The state’s Rainy Day Fund can and should be used to pay for these essential improvements on every campus in the state that needs them.
