Welcome, Jesuits!
Brebeuf is lucky enough to have three new Jesuits with us on campus this school year. Please join us in welcoming Fr. Adam DeLeon, S.J., Don Remy Niyitegeka, S.J., and Mark Nyipuoch, S.J. to the Brebeuf community!
Fr. Adam DeLeon, S.J. joins us from Loyola High School in Detroit, MI, where he spent the past six years as a religious studies teacher, Director of Campus Ministry, and coach for wrestling and rugby. He is originally from Cleveland, and in addition to his time in Detroit, his pastoral and educational experiences have taken him to Chicago, Jamaica, Nigeria, and Kenya. He did his undergraduate studies at College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA. He also holds several graduate degrees, including an MA in Theology from the Institute for Black Catholic Studies at Xavier University of Louisiana - the nation's only Catholic HBCU - and an Ed.D. from the University of Pennsylvania.
Fr. Adam will serve in a new position with the title Assistant Principal for Mission Formation. In this role, he will serve as part of the Principal's Team, oversee Community Service and Campus Ministry, supervise our Jesuit scholastics in their training and formation, and serve with our other assistant principals Corey Pettigrew and Erika Blakey in teacher professional development, coaching, and support.
Don Remy Niyitegeka, S.J., who goes by Remy, is originally from Rwanda. When he was a young boy, his family fled the 1994 Rwandan genocide and eventually settled in Kenya, where he grew up. Following his schooling, he taught French language in two different schools in Kenya. He is fluent in four languages including English, French, Kiswahili, and Kinyarwanda; additionally, he is conversant in Spanish and Portuguese. Remy joined the Jesuits in 2016 and has served and studied in Uganda and Zimbabwe since then.
Mark Nyipuoch, S.J. is originally from the Republic of Sudan, from a town that is now part of South Sudan. During the Sudanese civil war of the 1990s, his family fled and settled in Uganda where Mark grew up, and then later returned to South Sudan to enroll in the Jesuit secondary school in the town of Wau. Mark joined the Jesuits in 2016 as well. He has taught English and religious studies, is fluent in Arabic as well as English, and is passionate about fitness training and athletics of all kinds - especially basketball.
Jen LaMaster, former Assistant Principal and current Associate Provincial Assistant for Secondary and Pre-secondary Education for the Midwest Province, was kind enough to share this photo with us from this morning's Mass of the Holy Spirit. We loved gathering for the first all-school Mass and convocation of the school year, and we felt especially blessed to celebrate it with our new Jesuits!

Brebeuf students serving on 2022-2023 Mayor's Youth Leadership Council
Congratulations to Brebeuf Jesuit students Eli Aldrich, Elizabeth Dolan, Maggie Boncosky, and Owen Morrical for being selected as part of the Mayor’s 2022-2023 Youth Leadership Council.
This council, made up of a diverse group of high school juniors and seniors across Indianapolis, was established to help develop the next generation of Indianapolis leaders and elevate young people’s role in making Indianapolis a safer, stronger, and more welcoming city. These students will be learning to engage with their peers, civic leaders, and other organizations to host community impact days with the goal of amplifying the voices of youth in the city of Indianapolis. What a tremendous honor! Congratulations to all.

covid-19 protocols - updated august 12, 2022Following an update from the CDC late last week, below are Brebeuf Jesuit's COVID protocols, which have changed from what was sent out just before the new school year began.
The change is in the procedure when someone has been exposed to COVID through contact with a family member or other person they've been in close proximity with. There is now no required quarantine for those who are unvaccinated. Instead, anyone who has been exposed is advised to wear a mask for 10 days and get tested on day 6. Please read the complete update here.

mindfulness at brebeuf jesuitOne of the core values of a Brebeuf Jesuit education is cura personalis, or care of the whole person. As a natural extension of this holistic approach to education, we began offering elective DBT Mindfulness 1 and 2 courses to our students five years ago. These courses teach students stress reduction, emotional regulation, compassion, responsibility, and awareness - skills that are integral to a balanced life both in- and outside of the classroom.
As Brebeuf Jesuit affirms the importance of helping students navigate the increasing demands of high school and beyond, Michelle Martin’s role as French and Mindfulness teacher will expand to integrate mindfulness into all corners of school life. We know from scientific studies that mindfulness practices can positively impact athletics, the arts, and classroom instruction, while also supporting conflict resolution, relationship-building, and action for social justice.
Michelle’s credentials include a 200-hour certification by the International Mindfulness Teachers Association, Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction for Teens, Mindfulness for Student Athletes, Positive Neuroplasticity Training, and she is currently completing certification for Trauma-Informed Mindfulness for Schools.
