A significant data breach at National Public Data (NPD) has potentially exposed sensitive information, including Social Security numbers, birth dates, and addresses.
Check if You Were Affected: Cybersecurity firm Pentester has created a free search tool. Enter your name, state, and year of birth here to see if your information was involved.
If You Are Affected:
Credit Freeze: Set up accounts with Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion to place a free credit freeze on your accounts. (You must do each separately.) This prevents new credit accounts from being opened in your name without your consent.
Credit Monitoring: Regularly monitor your credit reports for any suspicious activity.
Two-Factor Authentication: Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) on all your financial accounts and as many other accounts as possible to add an extra layer of security.
Strong Passwords: Ensure your passwords are at least 16 characters long and complex.
Password Manager: Use a password manager to save those long, complex passwords. My personal favorite free password manager is Bitwarden.
