Viki Copeland (BS ’88) was honored by the Hermosa Beach City Council for her more than 50 years with the city. Copeland started in April 1973 as a clerk and worked her way up to finance director by 1988. Copeland guided the city though challenging fiscal times, from the threat of oil drilling to the pandemic. In June, Copeland helped lead the consolidation of the city’s Human Resources and Finance departments to form the Administrative Services Department. She retired in December.
Pamela Munson (MS '89) has been appointed as in-house Laboratory Planner and Medical Equipment Planner for Corgan, a global architecture and design firm. Munson has over 25 years of experience as a microbiologist and is a certified interior designer; she has designed state-of-the-art lab spaces for world-class institutions such as Cedars Sinai, UCLA, and UC Irvine.
Cynthia Nava (MA '23) has been appointed city clerk for the Cerritos City Council. Nava brings 22 years of administrative experience in city government to her new role. She first joined the City of Cerritos in 2002 in the Building and Safety Division. She advanced through the organization, supporting the Recreation Services Division before joining the City Clerk's Office in 2018.
Dr. Terry Walker (BA ’93, CRDT ’01) was appointed the permanent Superintendent of the Adelanto Elementary School District on Nov. 12, 2024, after a two-month interim role. Dr. Walker has more than 30 years of experience in education, which includes classroom teacher, assistant principal and principal at the elementary and secondary level.

Carol Lee Janich (BA ’72) passed away on Sept. 21, 2024. Janich loved riding horses and won many ribbons showing and riding in and around Stanton, Calif. With her last horse, Janich enjoyed riding him in parades around town in both Havasu, Ariz. and Bishop, Calif. Janich was a National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) member, Mojave Chapter of Southern California; she had two grandfathers who served in the American Revolution.
Stephen R. Martinez (BA ’73) passed away on Nov. 11, 2024. Martinez was a beloved educator in the Santa Monica and Culver City school districts for more than 40 years, where he moved up the ranks from an elementary bilingual teacher to assistant principal to principal. At El Marino, he established California's first multilanguage total immersion school in 1994.
Michael Corey Smith (BS ’82) passed away on Dec. 29, 2024, due to kidney failure. In 1975, Smith served a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Mexico City Mission. In 1980, he started working for Scanning Electron Analysis Labs (SEAL) before joining Intermedics in Texas. In 1999, Smith joined Guidant Corporation, later bought by Boston Scientific, before entering retirement.
