PRESIDENT'S CABINET LETTER
| |
Let us remember…..we are in the holy presence of God.
Hello Spartan Nation!
It is a pleasure to have the opportunity to update you on Spartan athletics. The past couple of years has consisted of many twists and turns for all of our student-athletes, coaches, and parents during the pandemic. As we begin to return to normalcy, it is important to reflect on the great achievements and growth we have been able to deliver for our student-athletes. The resilience and effort that our programs put forth during these difficult times to keep the needle moving forward for our student-athletes on and off the field of play can never be forgotten or applauded enough.
I am often asked what makes our athletic program successful. It is not easy to define in a few words but I will focus on some of the keys to the success of De La Salle Athletics. First, we continue to focus our emphasis and operate as an educational athletic program centered on providing a Lasallian-based co-curricular experience. Second, we have been blessed to have phenomenal coaches who are teachers first and foremost and coaches second. They continue to help our school deliver life lessons and skills to our student-athletes outside the normal school days and hours. The third key factor is our De La Salle community - past, present, and future. The passion, love, and support shown towards our student-athletes at all levels is second to none. Without this unconditional love and support, we would not be who we are and have not been able to accomplish what we have in our storied history. Continuing this tradition of excellence is a daunting task but with the consistent commitment to our school mission and focus on educational athletics, the current and future Spartans are in a phenomenal position to build off of the success of the past and add to the next chapters of our tradition.

Masking Update as of February 28, 2022 As you may be aware, Governor Newsom announced on Monday, February 28 that masks in California schools will become optional after March 11th. De La Salle and Carondelet look forward to March 14th, which will be the first day that masks become optional for schools. While still strongly recommended, students and staff will no longer be required to do so. However, people are allowed to continue to wear masks. Additional changes to policies and practices may be announced as more information is known and shared by the State and the County.

With the beginning of the Lenten season, De La Salle High School celebrated Ash Wednesday on March 2nd, which kicked off an annual school fundraiser, the Spartan Charity Challenge. This year the Spartan Charity Challenge will be fundraised both online and in person. For the online platform, the school will be using QR Codes (provided in the graphic) to collect donations through PayPal or a credit or debit card.
When making these donations, students can participate in the class competition by filling in their name and grade into the optional memo line. The in-person collection will take place every Friday during 5th-period classes. Additionally, students in the Hofmann Student Center will have the option to donate $1.00 to the Challenge when purchasing food. The Spartan Charity Challenge will run from March 2nd through April 11th.
Donations to this year’s Spartan Charity Challenge will support the Brothers’ Ministries in India and Sri Lanka, the De La Salle Brotherhood Fund, and Generation Alive.

COMPANY SPRING PERFORMANCE - HEATHERS
| |
Opening night for the De La Salle and Carondelet Theatre Company performance of Heathers is Thursday, March 31st in the Brother Celestine Cormier, FSC Theatre. Heathers the Musical (High School Edition), will have seven performance dates, with closing night coming on Saturday, April 9.
Although the teen version of Heathers removes most of the hot-button material like four-letter words, references to adolescent smoking, drinking, and fooling around, what is left is teens trying to be cruel to each other, trying to hurt each other, or trying to be kind to each other.
Both schools are pleased that Company is a place of Educational Theatre through which art helps to enlighten, raise awareness, and open dialogue that benefits the individuals involved, the audience, and the wider community. The content of Heathers will be part of wider school conversations on the themes raised in the performance in collaboration with the school's Student Support team and various academic departments.

After having to cancel the Crab Feed last year, we are thankful to have been able to bring this event back, bringing together current families, alumni families, faculty and staff, and longtime De La Salle supporters.
A special thank you to the Parent Association Crab Feed Chair Veronica Blanco for organizing this fun evening, as well as the rest of the parent volunteers that dedicated their time and efforts to help make this event a success. Additionally, this event would not be possible without our Spartan Student Servers, led by Director of Campus Life & Culture, Mr. Michael Aquino.
Thank you to our food and beverage suppliers, as well as Jeff Villafania and the De La Salle Kitchen Staff for the delicious food that was served.
We hope to see you again next year!

The next De La Salle Parent Association meeting will be on March 14, 2022. All De La Salle parents are welcome to attend these meetings!
Current Open Parent Association Board Positions: Currently, there are no open positions on the Parent Association Board. However, we have many parents in positions that will be open at the end of this school year because their sons are graduating. If you are interested in being on the Parent Association Board for the 2022-23 school year, please contact Valerie Nagel-Monaldo, President of the Parent Association, at valerie.nagel.a@gmail.com or Laura Flannigan, Vice President of the Parent Association, at flannygirl1@gmail.com.
Happenings: A BIG thank you to Veronica Blanco for leading the Parent Association team organizing the De La Salle Crab Feed after a two-year hiatus. It was a hugely successful event! We appreciate all of the volunteers that stepped up to help her with planning, setup, during the event, and cleanup.
A message from Veronica... I am happy that we were able to have a social event for families to get together considering that we were not able to do so last year. My committee leads and I tried to make this event as fun-filled and memorable as possible.
I was fortunate to have some awesome and wonderful people on my committee. Throughout the planning and cancellation last year and postponement of this year's event, they were supportive and motivated with one goal in mind - to organize the 2022 De La Salle Crab Feed.
I'd like to thank Rhonda DeMay, Melissa Su’esu’e, Melinda Sutton, Pamela Miller, and especially Louie Ramirez for their support and dedication. Without them, I would not have been able to successfully organize this event.
Also, I would like to thank the Parent Volunteers that stepped up to the plate to help out.
Finally, I'd like to thank the many people and companies who donated items for the Crab Feed... Steve Robertson of Turrentine Brokerage (who donated 16 cases of wine), the Martinez Family, Cali Craft Brewery, Bordenave's Bakery, Sweet Affair Bakery, Mr. Sam Elmashni of BuzzBallz.com, PepsiCo, DVW Commercial, C & L Produce, US Foods, Safeway, and Costco.
Thank you all for your support of De La Salle!
