For the academic year 2012-13, gifts to the CASL Annual Fund were used to help CASL students enrich their undergraduate experiences by taking them outside of the classroom. Donations enabled 26 CASL students to travel in order to present their research at national conferences or gather information for further study.
For example, four CASL science majors were able to attend the American Society for Biology & Molecular Biology Conference in Boston last April, giving them the opportunity to present research, as well as to network with biology students from other institutions and to meet experts in their fields of interest.
Another student, Charles Ford, had the opportunity to travel to Taiwan over the summer to further his study on the "Evolution of Mating Behavior in Orb-Weaving Spiders" and help his professor collect spiders to bring back to research their behavior.
"I've had the opportunity to work on cutting-edge research and teaching involving spiders," Ford said. "I never would have been able to experience these things, including my amazing trip to Taiwan, without the help of friends and donors like you. Your support of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters helped make my dreams a reality."
