Thanks to All Our Public Interest Superheroes!
The Law School’s 2024 Public Interest Auction was a super success thanks to you, the generous alumni who donated goods, services, and experiences; made monetary gifts; sponsored the event; and bid high and often at this year’s three-day, superhero-themed event.
Together with other funding sources, Public Interest Auction proceeds supported our 2024 Summer Public Interest Fellowship Program. In all, 81 students received Fellowships. That’s right! We were able to award fellowships to all eligible students this year, so they can work full time without pay in non-profit organizations and governmental agencies, where they focus on providing legal assistance and advocacy to traditionally underrepresented clients, groups, or interests.
The $468,838 in Fellowship awards includes proceeds from the Alumni Association Luncheon Auction, the student-led Public Interest Auction, and the SHEro Challenge led by Rose DiMartino '81, who matched gifts from SHEro Challenge donors who funded half of a Summer Public Interest Fellowship.
To learn more about the Law School’s public interest programs and initiatives, please visit our Public Interest Center or contact Center Director Jeanne Ortiz-Ortiz at ortizorj@stjohns.edu.

Let's Recap
It’s been another great year of learning and leadership within the Law School Alumni Association Alumnae Leadership Council Chapter (ALC). Last month, ALC mentors and mentees met in person for this year’s sixth and final Mentoring Circles Program session. The culminating event gave alumnae the opportunity to network and socialize with other Mentoring Circles members. A special thanks to ALC Mentor Ruth Calaman '97 for hosting.
Alumni and friends spent a beautiful day on the green at the Hon. Theodore T. Jones, Jr. '72L, '07HON Memorial Golf Outing. While driving, pitching, and putting, they raised funds to benefit deserving students through the Hon. Theodore T. Jones, Jr. '72 Memorial Scholarship Fund. Congratulations to the event’s honoree, Jonathan Sack '89, who was recognized for his ongoing support of St. John’s Law.
Alumni, members of the bench and bar, and other guests gathered at the Players Club in Manhattan to honor the legacy of Hon. John E. Sprizzo ‘56C, ‘59L. Hosted by the St. John’s Law Alumni Association Manhattan Chapter, this recurring event recognizes an outstanding individual for their commitment to public service and the Rule of Law. This year, we presented the Sprizzo Award to Richard Donoghue ‘92, partner at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman, former Principal Associate Deputy Attorney General for the U.S. Department of Justice, and former U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York.
We took admitted students and alumni out to the ballgame for a classic NYC showdown! This year’s Subway Series Outing was a great success as we welcomed over 100 members of the St. John's Law community to Citi Field for a home team win.

In the Spotlights
We’re excited to share another installment of our Real Estate Minute Video Series highlighting the Law School’s LL.M. in Real Estate. We caught up with Kayla Dimatos '20, a real estate associate at Willkie Farr & Gallagher. She reflects on her experience as a Mattone Institute Real Estate Fellow, shares tips for potential LL.M. students, and highlights how her experiences at St. John’s Law have influenced her career.
The latest Mattone Institute Real Estate Alumni Spotlight is out, featuring James Thanasules '95, President, AmTrust Title, who shares: “The beauty of real estate law is that it involves many types of law—trusts and estates, matrimonial, bankruptcy, UCC, corporate, tax, regulatory, etc. So, courses on all those topics proved to be very helpful to me as an attorney.”

Professor Robin Boyle has signed a publishing agreement with Bloomsbury for Taken No More: Protecting Your Children Against Traffickers and Cults. Due out in 2025, the book aims to inform readers on the operations, tactics, and strategies of criminal individuals and enterprises that exploit children, tweens, teenagers, and young adults for economic gain. It will also serve as a professional resource for law enforcement, educators, mental health professionals, lawyers, and doctors.
Professor Boyle contributed to the political science book Generational Politics in the United States (University of Michigan Press). In a chapter titled “‘The Times They are a Changin’: Lessons Imparted from the 1960s Civil Rights Movement and the Current Day Climate Movement,” she compares and contrasts the Civil Rights Movement with the Climate Movement, as populated by different generations.
Over at Reason, in a post for The Volokh Conspiracy, Professor Mark Movsesian offers “Some Quick Thoughts on the Oklahoma Charter School Case.” And in a new episode of his “Legal Spirits” podcast, he interviews religion journalist Kelsey Dallas about a dispute that arose when the National Park Service denied permission for an annual Knights of Columbus Memorial Day Mass at a national cemetery in Virginia.
At the Symposium on Language Rights for Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, Professor Rosemary Salomone led a panel discussion on Developing Inclusive and Nondiscriminatory Education Policies in a Time of Mass Migration. She was also a guest on the Language on the Move and the America the Bilingual podcasts, where she discussed on her award-winning book, The Rise of English: Global Politics and the Power of Language (Oxford Academic).
Professor Keith Sharfman has published a short antitrust article, “Why Algorithmic Pricing Rather Benefits Consumers,” about the underappreciated benefits to consumers of real estate management software.
