Health Literacy For All

As a literacy organization, we deeply understand the increased difficulties our students might face in accessing medical information. Limited health literacy can result in increased and lengthier hospital stays, delaying preventative medicine and services, difficulty managing chronic illnesses, and making medication errors. This is why we are absolutely thrilled to receive two grants that will help provide additional health literacy support for our students.
Literacy Volunteers is proud to announce a $10,000 grant from Sentara Health to support our health literacy initiatives. This grant enables LVCA to continue providing targeted health literacy curriculum and resources for both our tutors and students. We thank Sentara for supporting our work. Through their generosity, our students will continue to improve their lives!
We also want to thank The Manning Family Foundation for generously awarding Literacy Volunteers a $15,000 grant to help support our health literacy work. Every year, our students work not only on health literacy goals, but many also persue training in the medical field or plan to do so. Through the help of both of these grants, we can continue to support our students' needs.
Using Medline Plus
Our Community Partner webinar
A health literacy questionnaire for tutors and students
We kicked off our health literacy focus this month by providing new resources, lesson plans, and a tutor workshop. A critical component of health literacy is understanding how to process and access medical knowledge. This is why we were excited to welcome Kimberley R. Barker, MLIS, a librarian for UVA Health Sciences, for a workshop on using Medline Plus, a free, easy-to-read, online database that is vetted through the National Library of Medicine. Click here to learn more about this resource.
In the workshop, Ms. Barker sought out information from our tutors about barriers students have in accessing and understanding health knowledge and care. This information was relayed to UVA Health to allow them to better understand hurdles their patients might face and formulate ways for medical providers to better address this. This is the start of an ongoing conversation that will hopefully improve access to care.
It is always clear to us that community is a web of support. This month, we saw this in action with the generous funding from The Manning Family Foundation and Sentara Health, the invaluable work our tutors do in conveying information to our students, and the resources provided to us from UVA Health. Together, we strive to improve health literacy for all!

Volunteer Training Opportunities

We can always use more volunteer tutors!
Literacy Volunteers would not run without our volunteer tutors (it's part of our name, after all), and we still have spots available in our upcoming training sessions. If you know of anyone who is interested in signing up, please encourage them to do so. We are always happy to answer any questions people might have, too. Just reach out at (434) 977-3838 or by email.

The Voices reading at The Festival of the Book is always moving and meaningful. The first 50 attendees will receive tickets to see U.S. Poet Laureate Ada Limon. Click here to learn more about the event and the Festival of the Book.
