August in the Garden
Wow, it's dry this year! This is a common refrain among visitors to the Botanical Garden. Straw-coloured lawns greet us when we arrive at the Garden, and one doesn't have to look very far outside of the Garden to see crispy perennials and shrubs, and stressed trees. People are quick to point to Metro Vancouver's water restrictions, and certainly, the rules make it difficult to keep plants thriving in hot weather, but this is not the whole story.

Shop in the Garden and Garden Centre

The Garden Centre continues to offer a good selection of summer blooming perennials to fill gaps in your garden. All conifers, hostas and roses are on sale 35% off. Many other perennials have been reduced in price and are individually marked with a sale tag.To help you with the summer tangle, our tool wall has a selection of secateurs including a new pair with a softer grip on the handle and a rachet-drive pair for thicker branches. We also offer a variety of plant-friendly soft ties in various sizes including velcro by the roll.

The book wall features Bill Terry’s new ‘The Carefree Garden’, a delightful view of nature’s role in his garden, and Deborah Madison’s ‘Vegetable Literacy’, the new garden-to-table cookbook from the co-author of the renowned ‘The Greens Cookbook’.

The very popular Kemi scarves include new patterns in very lightweight cotton/silk, linen and light wool.

New Funds in Memory of Ian Gillam Established
UBC Botanical Garden recently received a generous contribution of $100,000 in memory of Ian Gillam from his wife Dr. Shirley Gillam. This gift has established two funds in Ian’s name. The first, The Ian Gillam Memorial Endowment Fund, supports student projects in UBC Botanical Garden. These student projects can include: programming, maintenance, capital, operations and research. The second fund, The Ian Gillam International Fellowships Fund supports international students working in the Botanical Garden and Nitobe Memorial Garden. The first student recipient of the Ian Gillam International Fellowship, Mr. Shin Tanaka from Chiba University in Japan is currently engaging in research and practicum work in the Nitobe Garden on a six-month appointment.

Sustainability Field School Update
UBC Botanical Garden and SPEC have been busy hosting class of the Sustainable Communities Field School. Designed to engage businesses and organizations in learning about sustainability in Vancouver, the Field School welcomed employees from the Vancity, The Vancouver Aquarium and Whole Foods for sessions in July. Employees of these businesses participated in fun, hands-on learning about forest conservation, water cycling, and food systems all while team building with their fellow employees.

Read about their experiences on two separate blog posts on our website. Vancity engages with sustainability and Vancouver Aquarium and Whole Food Visits the Field School
