What activities were you involved in while you were a student at Denison?
While at Denison, I was on the varsity football team and served as an admissions ambassador, tour guide, June-O volunteer, residential assistant, and head resident. Related to my studies, I was a teaching assistant and an active member of the Denison Biological Society. I also enjoyed my time with Mortarboard, Omicron Kappa Delta society, Alpha Epsilon Delta, and the college bowl.
Since graduation, how have you stayed connected with Denison?
Over the past several years, I have served as a panelist and host for pre-medical students in our ambulatory office. We have had seven Denison students rotate through our office, many of whom are currently in medical school. I also currently serve as an alumni admissions ambassador.
What has been most rewarding about your volunteer experience?
I really enjoy connecting with the current students and serving as a liaison to help them gain admission to medical school. We try to provide a fun shadowing experience in a residency program where pre-medical students can rotate and work with current medical students and resident physicians. It has been such a wonderful experience watching some of our pre-medical students be successful in medical school over the years!
What would you tell an alum who is considering volunteering for Denison?
When you reconnect with the university and current students, it reminds you of all the ways in which Denison has helped you be successful in your career, and it is really fulfilling to give your time and energy to help students be successful as well.
What is your favorite Denison memory?
The best job I’ve ever had was working with Dr. Laurel Kennedy as a member of June-O — spending the summers on campus and working together on a diverse team was so rewarding. I also really enjoyed my summer research with Dr. Tom Schultz in the biology department, evaluating dragonfly populations at Dawes Arboretum. Football pre-season and “two-a-days” were always so much fun as well.
