FACULTY SPOTLIGHT

Dr. Devora Steinmetz, Hebrew College Rabbinical School

"I really love teaching almost all texts. For me, entering into a text is a journey of exploration. In teaching, I try to bring students along on this journey, helping them be open to what they will encounter and to approach whatever they come upon with curiosity and generosity and respect. It’s akin to the ethical stance that I hope they will take when encountering another human being who may be different from themselves—in fact, who will be different from themselves. How do we try to hear the voice of the other, to understand the other, to open ourselves to the other, rather than expecting the other to reflect back to us what we want to hear or what we already know and believe?"

Myra Snyder Communal Leadership Fellowship

Myra Snyder, Me’ah ‘97, MAJS ‘01, remembers the feeling of belonging she found through her studies at Hebrew College: “I decided to walk into Hebrew College back when it was in Brookline to find out what they had to offer a person like me who had no previous experience in Judaic studies except Me’ah. I felt like I was home. It was suggested that I begin my journey with one course. Not long after that I entered the master’s program. I learned Hebrew from scratch and felt a true sense of accomplishment when I wrote and delivered my thesis! Now, I want to give back through an opportunity for young people to open themselves up to study.”

God counts the Israelites lovingly (perhaps obsessively), confirming that each one of us is still there. While God’s obsession with censuses might be a sign of anxious attachment, God isn’t the only one with attachment issues in this parashah. Psychiatrist John Bowlby developed Attachment Theory, based on the observation that human beings innately crave proximity to one another.
