Summer of Discovery & SummerFest 2018

-Free Fun for All-
Our Summer of Discovery culminates with SummerFest 2018 at Main, Saturday, July 28, 10am- 2pm. Experience ‘pop-up’ magic with Erica Sodos, bicycle-powered bubbles and music, solar cookies, music by DJ Drake, stilt walking, Ben and Jerry's ice cream and more interactive, playful fun for all ages. SummerFest takes place in the new Civic Area by Boulder Creek and is produced by BPL and Boulder Parks and Recreation.
Through July 31! Our summer reading program has transformed into a celebration of reading AND sharing learning and fun, together. There's still time to register. Maintain and build reading and literacy skills over the summer, while enjoying events and activities for pre-readers, kiddos, teens and, for the first time, adults. Coming up: Boulder hikes, cooking classes, mineral skincare, and a Teen Scavenger Hunt in downtown Boulder.

Book Giveaway Boulder Housing Partners

Book Rich Environments Connects Families with Books
More than 50 residents received free books for their families at a Boulder Housing Partners (BHP) and BPL Book Rich Environments event. BPL and BHP are among 37 sites in the country selected to participate in the Book Rich Environments program, a partnership between housing authorities and public libraries led by the National Book Foundation. Through this program, BPL and BHP will connect families with free books, programming and vital connections to libraries and other local resources at events throughout the year.
Studies show the higher the number of books available in a home, the greater the odds a child will succeed at school and later in life. Those odds increase even more each time we read to a child, or engage through singing, writing, playing and talking. Learn more about early literacy at BPL here

Art Exhibits at Main

SLOW MOVER
Coming Up July 21 - August 19, Canyon Gallery
Presented by artists Matthew and Lisa Bethancourt of Mouse & the Billionaire, this is a series of traditional and interactive artworks that invite viewers to reflect on the slow movement of time. Living with artwork over time can be powerful and is very different than seeing something for a few minutes in a public context. For this reason, selected works will be given to interested individuals during the exhibition.

ORIGINS
Through September 14, Arapahoe Ramp
ORIGINS is a group exhibition about immigration and belonging. Curated by Melanie Yazzie and Jennifer Heath, this show shares artworks created by indigenous or descendants of indigenous people addressing topics such as land, incursion, aggression, home, empowerment, and resistance.
ORIGINS is a companion exhibition to PERILOUS JOURNEYS in the Present Box at the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art through July 28.

The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang
"Stella Lane thinks math is the only thing that unites the universe. She comes up with algorithms to predict customer purchases--a job that has given her more money than she knows what to do with, and way less experience in the dating department than the average thirty-year-old. It doesn't help that Stella has Asperger's, and French kissing reminds her of a shark getting its teeth cleaned by pilot fish. Her conclusion: she needs lots of practice--with a professional. Which is why she hires escort Michael Phan. This book is a surprising mix of sweet and steamy romance."

Library Stories
"Thank you for including adults in the summer reading program. I've been so envious for years that kids get to have all the fun!" -Summer of Discovery Participant & Program Attendee

Today we had something cute happen. Two little girls about three or four years old put several chairs in a car formation, and then sat in the "car." One girl said, "Do you have your seatbelt on?" The other yelled, "Yes!" I just love that even in pretend cars, they wouldn't drive without seatbelts. -George Reynolds Branch

"Last Week, BLDG 61 put on a workshop just for BoulderReads participants. Everyone got to personlize a little field book using the laser etching machine. Participants left EXTREMELY excited about the Makerspace." (Event pictured below)
