Federal regulations require institutions to notify students whenever a federal loan or TEACH Grant disbursement is made on their behalf. This notification is known as the Right to Cancel and applies to all students who receive a federal loan or grant disbursement, including Direct Subsidized, Direct Unsubsidized, Direct Additional Unsubsidized, Parent PLUS, Graduate PLUS, and TEACH Grant funds.
The purpose of the Right to Cancel is to ensure students are fully informed of their borrowing and are given the opportunity to reduce or cancel all or a portion of their federal loan(s) if they determine the funds are not needed.
Federal regulations require that this notice be sent no earlier than 30 days before the disbursement and no later than 30 days after the disbursement. At Stetson University, Right to Cancel communications are sent on a weekly basis (every 7 days) to ensure timely and consistent notification.
If a student submits a request to cancel or reduce their loan(s), the Office of Student Financial Aid must confirm that the student understands the financial impact of that request. Cancelling or reducing loan funds may result in a balance owed to the University, which becomes due immediately.
For Parent PLUS Loan cancellations or reductions, students are reminded that while they may request changes, it is their responsibility to notify the parent borrower, and they must acknowledge that the adjustment may create an outstanding balance on their student account.
