Herbal and botanical extracts are booming worldwide, with the market projected to grow at an annual rate of 5.5% annually between now and 2030, reaching a value of USD 54.2 billion. The Rooibos Council said that Rooibos, known for its versatility and health benefits, like supporting heart health, aiding in stress management and digestion, is beginning to make significant inroads into this market, steadily becoming a notable player in the global extracts industry.
Adele du Toit, spokesperson for the Rooibos Council, said more than half of global consumers are now seeking products featuring botanicals, driven by a shift toward natural ingredients, rising health consciousness and a growing preference for functional foods, beverages and clean skincare. “Macroeconomic factors like increasing disposable incomes, advancements in biotechnology and an ageing population are further fuelling this surge.”

Looking for a refreshing salad you can serve during the hot summer months? Try this recipe to prepare a lovely Rooibos and quinoa salad at home. Perfect as a side, or a main meal!
Ingredients:
- 1 Cup quinoa, rinsed
- 2 Cups of water
- 2 Rooibos teabags
- 1 Cup halved cherry tomatoes
- 1 Cucumber, diced
- 1 Bell pepper (any colour), diced
- ¼ Red onion, thinly sliced
- ¼ Cup each chopped fresh parsley, chopped fresh mint leaves and chopped toasted almonds
- 1 Juice of lemon
- 2 Tbs Extra-virgin olive oil
- Salt and pepper
- Pomegranate seeds
- Extra chopped herbs or lemon wedges, optional, to serve
Directions:
- In a medium saucepan, combine the quinoa, water and teabags. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer, covered, until the quinoa is cooked and the water has been absorbed, about 15-20 minutes.
- Remove the teabags and fluff the quinoa with a fork. Leave to cool to room temperature.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the quinoa with the tomatoes, cucumber, bell pepper, red onion, parsley, mint and almonds.
- Drizzle the lemon juice and olive oil over the salad and season with the salt and pepper to taste.
- Toss everything together until well combined and transfer the salad to a serving platter or individual bowls. Sprinkle the pomegranate seeds over. Garnish with extra chopped herbs or lemon wedges, if using.
- Serve immediately or refrigerate until ready to serve.
