Wichita medical student's research project snags national fellowship, $6,000 award |
Morgan Bretches, second-year medical student at KU School of Medicine-Wichita, has received the Alpha Omega Alpha Carolyn L. Kuckein Student Research Fellowship, which is intended to foster the development of the next generation of medical researchers.
Bretches, who lost a family member to breast cancer, is studying the resistance that cancer cells build up to two drugs used in the treatment or prevention of breast cancer. She's working on the project with Shang-You Yang, Ph.D., research professor at KU School of Medicine-Wichita and associate professor of biological sciences at Wichita State University.

The new Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship Program at KU School of Medicine-Wichita – the first of its kind in Wichita – launched in 2023, was accredited through the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and now boasts five fellows.
In just about a year’s time, the program has “exponentially increased the number of children and families that are receiving care by physicians specializing in child and adolescent psychiatry,” said Cassie Karlsson, M.D., associate professor and director of the program.

Long-running Sweet A'Fair fundraiser set for Sept. 24 |
Just as she has every year since 1994, Donna Sweet, M.D., will again open her home to host the Sweet A’Fair fundraiser, the largest revenue generating source for the Sweet Emergency Fund since the inaugural backyard picnic 30 years ago. The Sweet Emergency Fund is a safety net for HIV/AIDS patients to ensure they can afford medical care.
