Uptown Partnership

A new executive director and funding are poised to bring Uptown Martinsville back as the destination people want to be.

And it all starts with a survey that asks local residents what they want to see in uptown Martinsville.

Kathy Deacon, the new and first executive director of Uptown Partnership, said the organization has a strategy for revitalizing uptown Martinsville -- and that starts with a survey in which residents can share their opinions and insight.

Kathy Deacon came on board May 3 as the executive director of the recently formed Uptown Partnership, which is operating with a 3-year, $350,200 grant from the Harvest Foundation.

The revival of Uptown depends on the input of people who are part of the community, Deacon said.

Congratulations to Rudy's Girl Media!

Rudy’s Girl Media is a multimedia company based locally with a diverse catalog of film, television, and web and print projects. The company specializes in bringing original TV and film projects to life. It is the brainchild of local resident Natalie Hodge - author, speaker, and content creator.

While Natalie counts herself as fortunate in that she's been able to continue producing local multimedia projects, the pandemic has limited her ability to screen them. Prior to the shutdown, she had several screenings booked at colleges and universities across the country.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, she had to rethink her game plan but felt the challenge gave her an opportunity to work on other facets of the business. The idea of creating a show that features area entrepreneurs navigating the murky waters of small business ownership was born out of the hardship.

The Pay it Forward MHC small business relief fund allowed Natalie to pay staff and secure supplies/equipment for the pilot reality series “Hometown Hustle,” which is now in post-production.

We are thrilled to welcome Pay it Forward MHC recipients back for another opportunity to receive a forgivable loan!

If your business was funded between June 2020 and March 31, 2021, you are eligible to apply for a second forgivable loan of $2,000. Applications are still open for first-time applicants who will receive the full $3,000 if approved.

Selections are made on a first-come, first-served basis with preference given to applicants that have a demonstrated need and a valid business license.
