House of Delegates Recap

The Nashville Academy of Medicine extends its appreciation to the members who served as delegates at the Tennessee Medical Association House of Delegates on Saturday, May 17. Their commitment to advocacy and leadership was evident in the strong presence of NAM members, including students, residents, and practicing physicians, representing a broad range of specialties. NAM was proud to be the largest delegation at the House for the fourth consecutive year!

Congratulations to NAM board member Dr. Trey Lee, who served as Speaker for 2025 and will continue in this leadership position through 2026.

In addition, NAM member and MFN Board member Dr. Natalie Dickson was honored with the Dr. William Schaffner Public Health Hero Award, recognizing her outstanding contributions to public health in Tennessee.

New 2025 Laws Affecting Physicians

Several new state laws enacted by the 2025 General Assembly are now in effect and may require action by physicians. Others are for informational purposes only. These updates include:
         Action Required by Physicians:
  • Alpha-gal Syndrome Reporting (PC 56): Must be added to Tennessee’s list of reportable diseases by July 1, 2025.
Information Only - No Reporting/ Action Required by Physicians:
  • Abortion Exceptions (PC 217): Clarifies legal definitions around exceptions to Tennessee’s abortion law.
  • Medical Ethics Defense Act (PC 266): Allows physicians to refuse participation in procedures that violate their conscience, with certain exceptions.
  • Prior Authorization Notification (PC 125): Repeals a burdensome notification requirement, easing administrative strain on providers.
Physicians with questions should contact the TMA Legal Department at 800-659-1862, ext. 1645 or legal@tnmed.org. Updates will continue as laws take effect throughout the year.
