The Rubenstein Library's disruptive copy of A Curious Herbal

This summer, independent researcher Janet Stiles Tyson made some remarkable discoveries related to the Rubenstein Library's copy of Elizabeth Blackwell's A Curious Herbal.

We acquired the two volumes of Blackwell's work on medicinal plants in 2017. A Curious Herbal is used often in instructional sessions and for displays. Knowing more about our unique copy adds to the richness of our discussions with students and researchers. We appreciate Janet sharing her scholarship! Read more about Janet Stiles Tyson's discovery.

Duke joins the Consortium for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine

This year, Duke became a member of the Consortium for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine (CHSTM). This consortium brings together educational, cultural, and scientific institutions to promote public and academic understanding of the history of science, technology, and medicine. CHSTM provides online resources for teaching, learning, and research. The consortium also awards fellowships for researchers and produces events for academics and for the public. Our membership brings greater promotion of all Rubenstein Library materials, especially the Josiah Charles Trent Collection with numerous materials related to the history of medicine and science within our History of Medicine Collections. We are thrilled to be a member!

A personal narrative of Moses Swan and his involuntary confinement beginning in 1860, detailing life—and the violence—within a psychiatric institution.

Madame Breton. Avis aux mères qui ne peuvent pas nourrir, ou, Instruction pratique sur l'allaitement artificiel. Paris: Imprimerie de P. Baudouin, rue des Boucheries Saint-Germain, 38, 1847.

This nineteenth-century pamphlet by Madame Breton, a female pseudonym for Félix-Séverin Ratier, features advice to mothers unable to breastfeed. The illustration on the cover features a satisfied infant holding a feeding bottle.

Join us for our next Trent History of Medicine Lecture Series! We are pleased to host Dr. Paul Kligfield on Tuesday, April 11, 2023, in the Rubenstein Library. We will share more details this spring as the date gets closer.

A Library of Cardiology: The Paul Kligfield Collection

In May 2019, the History of Medicine Collections acquired the collection of Dr. Paul Kligfield. The collection includes over 2,000 items from his 40 years of collecting in the field of cardiology. On display in the Josiah Charles Trent History of Medicine Room are items from this collection. The exhibit will remain on display through April 17, 2023.

On display on the Student Wall in Perkins Library are posters from students in Dr. Seth LeJacq's Doc Tales: Medical Narratives in History Writing 101 course. Students teamed up to create posters reflecting primary source analysis utilizing History of Medicine Collections and other Rubenstein Library materials. Posters include items such as the Trent Collection's Memento Mori, the Four Seasons, and more. The exhibit will remain on display through Spring of 2023.

Finally, we thought we would end on a cool image from our collections, because we have a lot of those, and we like to leave you with a smile.
