What a Year!

LVCA staff, Steven Reid, Catherine McCall, Rebecca Thomas, Maureen Overstreet, Heather Tebbenhoff, and Ellen M. Osborne at our 40th birthday party; Executive Director Ellen M. Osborne receiving state commendation House Resolution 465 from Delegate Sally Osborn at the student achievement ceremony; Wordplay Winners!
2023 was quite a year! We are so grateful to everyone for making our 40th year so memorable!
A few highlights:
  • Wordplay continued to be the best trivia fundraiser in town (in our very biased, but true, opinion). Congratulations to Maxient, the 2023 winner!
  • Our mini-conference in June was a huge success with over 60 participants and representation from community organizations such as Cville Tulips, IRC, Sin Barreras, and TJACE.
  • We celebrated with 10 current and former students at the July 4th Monticello citizenship oath ceremony.
  • Nancy Cohen was awarded the United Way of Greater Charlottesville’s 2023 United Way Caring for Community Volunteer of the Year Award.
  • Our Student Achievement Ceremony returned, and we honored 76 students. Additionally, Delegate Sally Hudson presented Executive Director Ellen M. Osborne House Resolution 465, commending LVCA for our service to the community.
  • We threw ourselves a 40th birthday party, complete with cake (donated by Albemarle Baking Company), games, and prizes!
Most importantly, we served 370 students with 250 volunteer tutors! To learn more about Fiscal Year 23, please read our impact report linked below.

The brand new English for the Interview Handbook!
Our winter citizenship classes start this month, and Citizenship Coordinator Catherine McCall has been hard at work behind the scenes. She recently revamped the English for the Interview handbook, making it more student and tutor-friendly.
If you are a tutor who works with a citizenship student, please stop by the office and pick up your copy.
Be sure to check out the news section to read Catherine's latest article about making citizenship classes more accessible!
