Acitivity of the Month:

Eclipse Chalk Art

Observing a total solar eclipse can be an exciting, once in a life time experience! Long before there were cameras or telescopes, eclipse watchers recorded what they saw in the sky in words, drawings, and paintings. Patrons can have fun creating their own picture of a solar eclipse with chalk and paper!
This activity comes with step-by-step instructions, eclipse facts and descriptions, as well as a how-to video!

Science Through the Shadows

Over the next three years, the Fiske Planetarium production team (in collaboration with the Chabot Science Center and the Michigan Science Center) will produce and distribute short 3-6 minute videos about eclipses, occultations, and transits. All videos will be provided FREE in both English and Spanish.

The second episode, Total Eclipse of the Sun, has just been released! This video highlights the upcoming total solar eclipse on April 8th, 2024 across North America. It teaches audience members what to expect on eclipse day, how to safely view the eclipse, and why it will be worth it to travel to the path of totality!

Eclipse Experts for Your Programs!

The SEAL team is working on a number of fronts to find "eclipse experts" who can work with their local libraries and provide eclipse information, programs, or safe viewing instructions.  Many libraries already have professional or amateur astronomers, or science teachers, that they worked with in 2017 and are getting back in touch.  But if you are new to eclipse outreach, and want to take the initiative, we have a resource for you.   Project astronomers and dedicated list maker, Andrew Fraknoi, has put together a guide to where and how you can find local eclipse experts.
