Organized Labor Takes to the Field for United Way


On Sunday, August 24 union members and their families helped United Way of the Capital Region kick-off another great year with a Harrisburg Senators baseball game. The event was hosted by Capital BlueCross and the Harrisburg Region Central Labor Council.  

Keith Rutherford, business manager UA Local 520 Plumbers and Pipefitters Union, threw out the first pitch.  

For more than 60 years, organized Labor and United Way of the Capital Region have worked together to improve the quality of life in Cumberland, Dauphin and Perry counties.

More Than 1,550 Volunteers LIVE UNITED Through Day of Caring

More than 1,550 volunteers helped kick off United Way of the Capital Region’s 2014 campaign on September 5 by participating in the 22nd annual Day of Caring.

The event, sponsored by PNC Bank, is the largest one-day mobilization of volunteers in Dauphin, Cumberland and Perry counties. Dressed in “LIVE UNITED” T-shirts, volunteers from more than 75 companies worked on 112 projects including indoor and outdoor cleanup, painting, landscaping and participating in activities with seniors.

United Way of the Capital Region also announced a 2014 campaign goal of $11,950,000 at a breakfast for Day of Caring volunteers. This represents a $250,000 increase over last year’s goal.

Labor Volunteers Man Children’s Safety Booth at Kipona

The Harrisburg Region Central Labor Council’s Community Service Committee teamed up with United Steel Workers, Local 668; Teamsters, Local 776 and the City of Harrisburg to sponsor a children’s safety booth at the Kipona Festival at Harrisburg’s River Front Park over Labor Day weekend.  

Twenty labor and community volunteers and McGruff the Crime Fighting Dog distributed junior crime fighter badge stickers, safe reflecting trick-or-treat bags and 911 stickers to the kids. Adults received NFL football schedules and voter registration forms. Special thanks to all who supported this event!
