Recycle your Christmas Tree at the Garden
Benefitting Sir Wilfred Grenfell Elementary School

December 26, 2014 – January 8, 2015
9:30 am – 4:30 pm
$5 Suggested Donation

Community members are encouraged to drop off Christmas trees for recycling at UBC Botanical Garden, where they will be chipped into mulch and used on garden trails. Decorations, including tinsel, must be removed. No yard trimmings please as they may contain invasive plants and can harm the botanical garden.

Proceeds will support building a garden storage shed, soil amendments and the purchase of tools and supplies at Sir Wilfred Grenfell Elementary School*. This garden is a SPEC School Garden Project. Tree chipping is generously supported by UBC Building Operations. Visit our website for details.

January in the Garden
One of the joys of the Botanical Garden in January is the unexpected fragrance of winter flowers. (Another is the picturesque, muffling beauty of a snowfall, but such events are notoriously difficult to predict.) We are certainly assured of mild temperatures in January, and the earliest of all winter flowering shrubs coaxed into bloom by these conditions is the aptly named winter sweet.

Unique jewelry made from material collected in our garden
The Shop in the Garden is proud to offer jewelry made by Jessica Jansen, some of which is made from plant material collected in the UBC Botanical Garden. Jessica Jansen is a Vancouver artist and a fourth generation jeweller who finds inspiration in the beauty of nature. Each piece of her elegant jewelry is uniquely cast from an original fragment of nature, selected while hiking, skiing or walking, most recently in the UBC Botanical Garden. Pine cones, acorns, seed pods, fungi and more are chosen for their exquisite details and potential to be cast in a process called “organic casting” wherein the natural form is replaced by metal, usually bronze or silver. During the casting process the textures come alive, adding to the charm and allure of this collection. Each piece is truly unique!

Children's books available at the shop

A Giraffe Called Geranium just published by local author, Ainslie Manson, has an immediately recognizable setting in the delightful watercolours of local artist Mary Baker, and tells the story of Geranium’s short stay in Caulfeild Cove, lovingly cared for by a little girl who comes to realize that a giraffe’s proper home is in Africa.
A Leaf Can Be. . . an air cleaner, an earth greener, a wind rider. . .
The magical images of Violeta Dabija complement perfectly the poetry of Laura Purdie Salas that is both educational and fun to read out loud.
Pounce de Leon written by Tim Wynne-Jones, appeals to both adults and children on different levels. Adults will enjoy the play on Ponce de Léon and the allusions to the legendary Fountain of Youth. A perky little cat helps an aging Florida Brown rediscover what she has lost in her overgrown garden. The paintings of Alfredo Tapia effectively contrast the gloomy interior of her home with the bright cheerfulness of her garden.
