| Webinar: Dissecting the Street Medicine Landscape Analysis with Street Medicine Leaders
| |
Join us June 6 at 11 a.m. CDT for an in-depth analysis and discussion of the recently published California Street Medicine Landscape Survey and Report. This first-of-its-kind study looks at the scope of street medicine practice across the state of California and how street medicine should be scaled to meet the growing need of people who are unsheltered.
Brett Feldman, MSPAS, PA-C, co-founder and Director of USC Street Medicine, co-authored this report and will discuss the findings and recommendations. He will be joined by other leaders in the street medicine movement as they discuss the implications of this report and what it means for the broader street medicine efforts across the country.
This webinar will:
- Examine the scope of practice and team composition for street medicine teams in CA.
- Explore the breadth of street medicine services and how this addresses the unique needs of people experiencing unsheltered homelessness.
- Assess how people who experience homelessness are served by the current healthcare system and by street medicine.
- Understand how street medicine is currently funded, the policies impacting its practice, and predict a future state.

New Study Shows Encampment Sweeps Lead to Deadly Outcomes for Unhoused Individuals
| |
A study published last month in the Journal of the American Medical Association shows encampment sweeps, bans, move-along orders and cleanups that forcibly relocate individuals away from essential services will lead to substantial increases in overdose deaths, hospitalizations and life-threatening infections, plus many other detrimental impacts.
The researchers developed a simulation model projecting the long-term health effects of involuntary displacement of people experiencing homelessness who inject drugs using data from 23 U.S. cities. They used city- and national-level data to closely model what the population looks like in real life, including their overdose risk and mortality. They then modeled two scenarios over a 10-year time period: no continual displacement and continual involuntary displacement of this population.
The results were clear: Involuntary displacement causes people to be disconnected from health care services and increases their risk of overdose and death.
