L’Dor VaDor: Listening from Generation to Generation
During this High Holy Day season—a time when many are still unable to be together—we encourage you to remember that physical distance does not remove us from the joy of listening to one another. Whether over FaceTime, Zoom, or the phone, sharing family stories not only brings us together, it also provides opportunities to plant seeds of memory in the next generation. How did you observe the High Holidays as a child? As a young parent? What stories can your children and grandchildren share about their holiday memories and experiences? Hear more from Grandparenting Through a Jewish Lens instructor Leann Shamash (above).

Moses and Musical TheaterParashat Ha'azinu (Deuteronomy 32:1-52) By Leah Carnow, Hebrew College Rabbinical Student
I am in a field in a small park in Wellesley, Massachusetts on a mild spring day. My partner and I are alone, seemingly the only people there on a weekday afternoon during a pandemic. I hesitate for a moment, and then, channeling Julie Andrews in the opening number of The Sound of Music, I run across the grass. I shout “ahhhhhhhhh,” as if I could fill the whole world with the sound of my voice. I let loose the cry of a person who has lost dreams, plans, and a sense of security, but can still feel the pulsing joy of being heard by the universe.
Five months later, I read Parashat Ha’azinu, and I pause at the opening words: "Give ear, O heavens, let me speak/Let the earth hear the words I utter!"
