ACE in Chile students find purpose in South Bend

Unable to travel to Chile to teach English as a second language, Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE) graduate students are doing similar work at Holy Cross School in South Bend. Holy Cross is a dual-language school — English and Spanish — and launched a two-way immersion program in 2017. Working at Holy Cross is a welcome alternative and a relief for the school, which is juggling both virtual and in-person learning amid the ongoing pandemic. (More...)

Student organizes COVID-19 convalescent plasma drive

When sophomore Robert Ducheskie emerged from quarantine with a negative COVID-19 test, he decided to do something to help others. He came up with the idea to have a plasma drive on campus. According to the South Bend Medical Foundation, which held the drive, people that have recovered from COVID-19 have developed antibodies that can be transfused into patients that are severely sick, which can help them recover more quickly. Research offers new ways to forecast COVID-19 cases

A statistical estimation technique developed by Zifeng Zhao, an assistant business analytics professor in the Mendoza College of Business, offers public health officials a new way to build short-term forecasts of coronavirus diagnoses and deaths. The research also provides insight into the effectiveness of earlier pandemic mitigation measures in 30 countries. (More...)

Notre Dame welcomes CEHI as a new research unit

The Children’s Environmental Health Initiative (CEHI), a research, education and outreach program committed to fostering environments where all people can prosper, recently joined the University. CEHI joined the University as a new research unit when Marie Lynn Miranda, CEHI director and former provost of Rice University, became the Charles and Jill Fischer Provost of Notre Dame. (More...)

Fighting to reach the next frontier in outer space 

Notre Dame Physics Professor Jay LaVerne is helping to design the next generation of materials allowing astronauts to safely explore deeper in space. “As a chemist and a physicist, it's kind of hard to see your work being used. And I saw this as one aspect where I can actually do something and it has an immediate effect on someone,” LaVerne said. (More...)

‘Fa-boo-lous!’ finish for Vespie on Food Network series

When deciding to indulge in a tasty dessert, ingredients like black garlic and beets aren’t go-to flavors. But taking risks with uncommon flavors helped to lift Notre Dame executive pastry chef Sinai Vespie into the finale of the Food Network's “Halloween Baking Championship” series.  Vespie won the annual television network holiday competition. 2020 United Way Campaign is underway

According to the United Way of St. Joseph County, four in 10 families struggle to meet basic needs. This year is even more challenging as many in the South Bend community face financial devastation and health challenges due to COVID-19. The 2020 theme for United Way of St. Joseph County is, “United We Lift up Our Communities” with a call to “Join the Fight.” (More...)
