Congress Set to Extend 45L Federal Tax Credit for Energy Efficient Homes Through 2021

As part of the agreement reached between leadership in the U.S. Senate and House and the White House on COVID relief and keeping the government running is a provision that extends the 45L credit through December 31, 2021.

The language addressing the 45L tax credit is:

SEC. 146. ENERGY EFFICIENT HOMES CREDIT. 9 (a) IN GENERAL.—Section 45L(g) is amended by 10 striking ‘‘December 31, 2020’’ and inserting ‘‘December 31, 2021’’. 12 (b) EFFECTIVE DATE.—The amendment made by this section shall apply to homes acquired after December 31, 2020.

The extension is a clean extension and does not alter any of the provision's current language.

The legislation must still pass the full House and Senate and be signed by the President.  Media reports indicate that this will be done.

This action allows RESNET staff time to work with our allies on a longer term extension and modification during the next session of Congress.
