Be More Tennessee Extension Agents and Steering Committee partners gathered in May in Murfreesboro to share best practices, network, connect with experts in the built environment and policy, systems, and environmental (PSE) strategies, showcase local projects and initiatives, and brainstorm ways to continue improving access to physical activity and nutrition in their communities.

Community Partnerships
We are fortunate to collaborate with many wonderful organizations across our close-knit community. Our Be More partners include the Clay County Mayor’s Office, Clay County Chamber of Commerce, Clay County Public Library, Clay County Senior Citizen Center, Clay County Anti-Drug Coalition, Clay County Schools, and Maple Grove Community Center.

Physical Activity Spotlight
We’re excited to complete the Maple Grove Community Center’s project, which will bring fresh energy to the space through colorful murals on the ball court, painted benches, and decorative trashcans.

As the summer heats up, remember that swimming, walking, and evening family exercise are great ways to stay active and cool down. Take advantage of our local lakes, rivers, creeks, streams, ponds, puddles, and pools!

Nutrition Efforts
We are working alongside our local food pantry partners to explore ways to improve operations and make their efforts as efficient and impactful as possible.

With 26% of Haywood County students living in food-insecure households, the Purple Pantry plays a vital role in providing access to nutritious foods. The pantry leaders are strengthening its impact by adopting new policies aimed at promoting healthier food choices.

Guided by the Healthy Food Pantry Assessment Tool, members of the Haywood Be More Steering Committee and Coordinated School Health team have identified key areas for improvement—including food literacy and the effective use of available items. Plans are underway to introduce nutrition education, recipe cards, storage tips, and strategies to reduce food waste.

While still in progress, a few of the proposed policy updates include prioritizing whole grains and low-sodium foods, limiting the distribution of highly processed items, and encouraging donations that follow USDA MyPlate guidelines. Plans also call for food demonstrations and accessible nutrition information to help families make informed choices.

As these changes take shape, the Purple Pantry is positioned to evolve from a food access site into a community-led model for promoting long-term health and well-being in Haywood County.
