| Food Safety and Education Month
|
September is National Food Safety Education Month. This year's focus is on preventing cross-contamination. Cross-contamination happens when harmful bacteria spread to food from other foods and surfaces such as countertops, cutting boards, and utensils. Help prevent cross-contamination by keeping raw meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs separate from other foods and washing hands and surfaces.

Community Advisory Board gathers for first MVTCP CAB Retreat
|
Since 1999, the Meharry Medical College/ Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center/ Tennessee State University Cancer Partnership (MVTCP) has engaged in interdisciplinary basic sciences, clinical and cancer control activities focused on addressing the disproportionate cancer incidence, morbidity, and mortality in minority and underserved populations.
A few weeks ago, a group of enthusiastic community members arrived at TopGolf for a day of collaboration and fun. The MVTCP Cancer Outreach Core Community Advisory Board (CAB) gathered for the first ever MVTCP CAB Retreat. The day was filled with group discussions, visioning exercises, and most importantly, an action plan for the CAB to address cancer disparities in our community.
The retreat ended with fellowship and team building, as the CAB members enjoyed good food and hit a few golf balls.

Reduce incidence of HPV-associated cancers: Get your HPVVAXFacts!
|
In recognition of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, we are highlighting a research study led by our faculty partner, Dr. Jennifer Erves, titled “A tailored, health communication intervention for HPV vaccine hesitant parents.”
|
Improving human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination among adolescents is an urgent public health priority to prevent and reduce incidence and disparities in HPV-associated cancers. “Only 58.6% of adolescents in the US and 52.9% in Tennessee ages 13–17 have completed the recommended doses of the HPV vaccine, well below the recommendation of 80%,” Erves says.
|
|
For her study, Dr. Erves has partnered with surrounding clinics, including the Meharry Medical Group and Vanderbilt DOT-8 Pediatric Clinics, along with Vanderbilt Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Health. The goal of the study is to develop and pilot test an educational intervention to address each parent’s unique concerns and informational needs related to HPV vaccine uptake.
The intervention will be delivered via mobile phone. “By providing tailored information prior to a child’s clinic visit, we hope that parents can get their questions addressed and make an informed decision on HPV vaccination," Erves explains. She hopes to further this work with clinics throughout Tennessee to address this important health issue.
For more information, contact Dr. Erves via email at jerves@mmc.edu or call 615-327-5692.

James named as new MVA Communications Specialist
|
Tomi Wiley James did not write her first words: she wrote her first short story.
She translated that love of storytelling into a career in newspapers and magazines, starting as a staff writer and working her way up to editor. Her favorite aspect of this career, she says, was connecting with people and sharing their stories.
“You see a bit of everything in the newspaper business,” James says. “You meet people from all walks of life and are exposed to all kinds of situations – both good and bad.”
James is also involved in the addiction recovery community, where she has observed the impact of health disparities. This sparked her interest, seeking a way to establish bridges between active resources and the community. That is when she found the Alliance, with its partners that offer programs to support people in recovery.
