Greetings from the Class of 2016
In the spirit of change, we have decided (after consulting the proper authorities, of course!) to sing a new song at our graduation. We would love for everyone to feel included. Please review the song here. We look forward to seeing you all on June 11.
Las Reinas
Seniors Cassandra Bigelow and Eva Gray, students of Spanish V, are "Las reinas" ("The Queens") of vocabulary and grammar!
Athletics 2016-2017
I'm very pleased to announce that Mr. John Schatz will serve as Athletics Director starting next year. Mr. Schatz's history with The Academy and his commitment to physical health make him the ideal candidate for this position. Many people are already having interesting discussions about The Academy's competitiveness, the breadth and depth of its program, how logistics are coordinated and communicated, and how athletics feeds into overall Academy culture. Mr. Schatz will be an able leader of these conversations moving forwards. Please join me in congratulating him.
HOSTING OPPORTUNITY FOR SCHOOL YEAR 2016-2017
Maria, 16, comes to us through PAX from a small town in Southern Italy. She will be joining the 12th grade in the fall. She loves the idea of living in the US for the academic year and wants to experience first-hand what it's like to be a part of an American family. She loves playing her guitar, is athletic and sociable. She is very close to her Italian family which includes an older brother. She enjoys cooking, drama, acting, movies, hiking, and photography. Maria loves pets and would ideally like to live in an Academy family with at least one child. She would arrive in late August 2016 and stay through mid-June of 2017. While she comes without a family stipend, her school bus transportation (if applicable) and her textbooks will be provided. If you are interested in learning more about hosting, please contact Sabine Mauri. For additional information about Maria, please read her bio and this letter from  her.
35th Anniversary Reunion
We were delighted to have more than 60 alumni/ae and their guests join us for the 35th Anniversary Reunion of The Academy. Reunion attendees took advantage of cooking Spanish lunch with Señora Grant, talking with Academy students, jamming in Ellington, roaming our halls, hearing the a cappella group, seeing former teachers, and genuinely enjoying each other.
Thanks to the students and staff for making it a memorable event. Here's to another 35 years!

Commencement - June 11
The Academy's 35th Commencement will be held Saturday, June 11 at 3:00 PM. All students are expected to attend graduation. Parents are invited and encouraged to attend, too.
A reception will follow the graduation ceremony. We ask families to bring food for the potluck reception. Traditionally, parents contribute the following items:
Grades 7 & 8: cookies, brownies or finger desserts
Grades 9, 10 & 11: cheese & crackers OR veggies & dip
Please sign up here to indicate what you can bring.
Beverages will be provided. Please make sure that all food contributions are prepared and ready to serve. Food can be dropped off in the Common Room when you arrive on campus for graduation. Please remember to take your dishes and platters home with you after the reception.
Thank you!
Updates from
the Academy Parent Council:
We had our last meeting of the year the morning of the work bee with a great turnout and a lively discussion of plans for the next year! Upcoming priorities for the Parents Council include:
  • staff and teacher appreciation lunch on 6/14. Please email Kathy Osborne if you can donate food -- to school or to her house in Northampton. Help is also needed on the day of the event.
  • the book sale on 7/13 -- stay tuned for more on this, but please start looking for books in good shape that your family is finished with!
  • starting to plan a great night out for the parent community (AKA Cornucopia Auction) on 11/12. Email Phoebe if you want to help with that.
We are also looking for people interested in co-chairing the Council for the upcoming year. Email Katie or Phoebe if you might be willing!
Check out the minutes from the most recent meeting here.
URGENT CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS
The Staff Appreciation Lunch is fast approaching, and help is needed the day of the event. The date is Tuesday, June 14th. How to help: volunteer the day of the event (set up 10:30-12, or clean up 12:30-2) or donate food or drinks to help make the meal special. Contact Kathy Osborne for more details. Please help us make this a special event to thank the staff for their hard work throughout the year!
Eighth Grade Civics - Mock Trial
Yesterday, Ms. Falco's 8th grade Civics class conducted a mock trial, as a culmination of their study of our legal system. This year's case was a criminal case in which the defendant, a high school student, was accused of terrorism. All members of the class of 2020 performed admirably, and, after a long deliberation, the defendant was found not guilty.
Special thanks to the junior class (and senior Indra Rapinchuk-Souccar) for acting as our jurors, and to Steve Breslow P '21 for serving as the judge!
